IHG Expands in India with 2027 Launch of Holiday Inn Express in Changanassery, Kerala
In a strategic move to strengthen its presence in India’s high-potential secondary markets, IHG® Hotels & Resorts has announced the opening of a new Holiday Inn Express in Changanassery, located in the scenic Kottayam district of Kerala. Slated for launch in the first quarter of 2027, this upcoming property aims to meet the growing demand for modern, short-stay accommodations that cater to both leisure and business travelers.
The project stems from a franchise agreement signed between IHG and KGA International Trades Private Limited, marking the second collaboration between the two entities after the successful operation of Crowne Plaza Kochi. The new hotel will be part of the ambitious KGA Mall, a mixed-use development currently under construction, which promises to reshape the hospitality and retail landscape of the region.
A Boost to Kerala’s Mid-Scale Hospitality Offerings
Holiday Inn Express is IHG’s fastest-growing global brand, with over 3,200 hotels worldwide. Known for offering efficient, smart, and affordable hospitality, it is specially designed for short-stay and transit travelers. The Changanassery property will feature 90 contemporary rooms built around the brand’s Generation 5 design, ensuring a seamless and comfortable guest experience.
Guests can expect not only functional accommodations but also a host of on-site amenities, including a banquet hall with over 100-person capacity, multiple food and beverage outlets, and access to retail, entertainment, and wellness options. A multiplex, family entertainment zone, and national and international shopping outlets will make the KGA Mall and hotel complex a full-service urban retreat.
Strategic Location for Tourism and Business
Changanassery, situated in central Kerala, has witnessed increasing tourist footfall due to its cultural richness, scenic backwaters, and strategic proximity to Kerala’s major urban hubs like Kochi, Alleppey, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram. The location makes it an attractive base for religious tourism, eco-tourism, and regional business travel.
According to the Kerala Tourism Department, domestic tourism in the state has surged by over 15% year-on-year, with central districts like Kottayam seeing a rise in weekend travel and intra-state movement. The addition of a globally recognized hotel brand will further uplift the destination’s hospitality infrastructure.
Statements from Leadership
Sudeep Jain, Managing Director, South West Asia, IHG Hotels & Resorts, emphasized the importance of this project:
“We are excited to announce the signing of Holiday Inn Express Kottayam Changanassery, marking our continued growth across important secondary markets in India. This hotel will bring international brand standards to a micro market in Kerala that is currently underserved by quality hospitality offerings.”
He added that IHG’s focus remains on reliable partnerships and delivering consistency and global quality, making the hotel a trusted option for travelers who value brand confidence and comfort.
Speaking on behalf of the KGA Group, Mr. K C Eapen, Director & CEO, noted:
“After the success of Crowne Plaza Kochi, we are pleased to deepen our partnership with IHG. This new development is part of our broader vision to introduce modern infrastructure and business potential to Changanassery.”
The KGA Group, with roots in Kuwait’s oil and allied industries through its company NBTC, has also announced its intention to launch six more hotels across India within the next six years, signaling an aggressive foray into the Indian hospitality market.
Significance for Kerala’s Tourism Ecosystem
This announcement aligns with Kerala’s recent emphasis on strengthening regional tourism circuits and promoting investment in hospitality beyond major cities. Changanassery’s religious landmarks, including ancient churches and temples, and its role as a gateway to the Western Ghats, make it an ideal choice for the Holiday Inn Express brand.
As per the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), the state is witnessing over ₹12,000 crore in tourism infrastructure investments between 2023 and 2026, focused on connectivity, accommodation, and destination branding. IHG’s move further complements this development strategy.
Looking Ahead
With a brand portfolio that includes InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton, IHG’s sustained investment in India underlines the country’s growing importance as a global travel market. The upcoming Holiday Inn Express in Changanassery will not only add capacity but also raise service benchmarks for midscale hotels in the region.
Whether travelers are seeking spiritual journeys, nature getaways, or business convenience, this new hotel promises a globally trusted, value-driven stay experience in one of Kerala’s most promising locations.
