First Phase of Patna Metro Now Live

Patna Metro begins limited service between ISBT, Zero Mile, and Bhootnath stations. Full connectivity awaits ongoing construction and safety clearances.

In a significant step forward for urban mobility in eastern India, the much-anticipated Patna Metro has commenced limited operations, with trains now running between three initial stations—ISBT, Zero Mile, and Bhootnath. While the full Phase 1 corridor remains under construction, this early rollout offers commuters their first taste of modern rapid transit in the capital of Bihar.

Early Access, Limited Stretch

The partial launch comes after years of infrastructure development under the Patna Metro Rail Project (PMRP), a central and state government-backed initiative aimed at transforming public transportation across the city. Initially, the full route was to include additional stations such as Malahi Pakadi and Khemnichak, but ongoing civil and system works at those locations have delayed their inclusion in the inaugural service.

Officials from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Bihar Urban Development and Housing Department have confirmed that train services will operate exclusively between ISBT, Zero Mile, and Bhootnath stations until remaining stations meet all safety, infrastructure, and technical requirements.

Commuter Relief and Traffic Decongestion

Despite the limited stretch, local commuters have welcomed the move. For thousands living near the operational stations, the new metro system offers a cleaner, faster, and more efficient alternative to the city’s congested roads. It is expected to significantly reduce travel time during peak hours and ease the burden on overburdened bus and auto-rickshaw networks.

Speaking to local media, Patna Divisional Commissioner Kumar Ravi noted, “This launch reflects a phased and safety-first approach. While full connectivity will take a little more time, this segment brings tangible relief to daily travelers.”

Features of the Operational Stretch

The three functional stations are equipped with several modern amenities to ensure a seamless commuter experience:

  • Automated ticket vending machines (TVMs)
  • Smart entry and exit gates with contactless technology
  • Digital display boards showing real-time train arrivals
  • LED lighting and air-conditioned platforms
  • Platform screen doors (PSDs) for safety
  • CCTV surveillance and security personnel

The stations have also been designed keeping universal accessibility in mind, with elevators, escalators, and clear signage for the visually impaired. Hygiene and cleanliness have been given priority, with regular sanitation protocols in place.

Construction Status and Future Expansion

As of August 2025, civil works on the remaining Phase 1 stations are in advanced stages. According to updates from the Bihar State Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BSMRCL), finishing touches such as electrification, signaling systems, and fire safety installations are being expedited.

Once complete, the full 14.05 km priority corridor (Corridor 2) will connect ISBT to Patna Junction, with key stops at Malahi Pakadi, Khemnichak, Bhootnath, Zero Mile, and Rajendra Nagar. The corridor aims to integrate with city bus services, auto stands, and future metro extensions for enhanced last-mile connectivity.

A Step Toward a Smarter Patna

This metro project is part of the Smart Cities Mission launched by the Government of India, aimed at improving urban infrastructure, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the quality of life for city residents. With Patna Metro now operational—even partially—it marks Bihar’s entry into the modern urban transit era, alongside cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune.

As per the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), metro rail projects are essential in achieving India’s 2070 net-zero carbon goals, and Patna’s inclusion strengthens regional commitments.

Public Awareness and Safety Measures

The authorities have launched a citywide awareness campaign encouraging responsible metro usage. Posters, digital screens, and audio announcements instruct passengers on safety guidelines, entry-exit procedures, and prohibited activities.

Metro officials have also coordinated with local law enforcement to deploy personnel at station entry points to ensure crowd control and immediate response in case of emergencies. In addition, trial runs and simulations are continuing daily across the non-operational segments to prepare for seamless full-corridor activation in the coming months.

Economic and Social Impact

The launch is also expected to drive economic uplift in areas adjacent to the metro line. Commercial establishments, retail hubs, and residential projects are already witnessing increased interest due to proximity to metro access. Real estate experts in Bihar note that “Metro-adjacent zones” are likely to become prime hotspots in the near future.

Additionally, the metro will empower thousands of students and working professionals in Patna, making commuting safer and more predictable.

What’s Next?

With the partial operations now underway, officials anticipate expanding service to additional stations like Khemnichak and Malahi Pakadi by late 2025. As testing and safety certifications progress, the Patna Metro is expected to achieve full functionality in phases, ensuring minimal delays and maximum commuter benefit.

Final Word

The launch of Patna Metro—even in its limited form—is a historic milestone for Bihar’s capital. It not only elevates Patna’s urban infrastructure but also symbolizes the region’s progress toward smarter, sustainable, and commuter-friendly transportation. The city now joins a growing list of Indian metros moving towards modern, multimodal connectivity, setting the tone for regional development in the years to come.
