Thailand’s ‘Buy International, Free Domestic Flights’ Campaign to Spark Sustainable Tourism Across Isaan, Sukhothai & Ayutthaya

Thailand offers 200,000 free domestic flights for international visitors (Sept–Nov 2025), promoting sustainable tourism in Isaan, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya & more.

Thailand is preparing to reinvigorate its tourism sector this autumn with a bold, government-backed scheme: international visitors who book inbound flights will receive free domestic air travel. Branded “Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights”, the campaign is set to deliver 200,000 free domestic flight tickets to foreign tourists, spanning the September to November 2025 travel window.

Funded by a THB 700 million subsidy, the government plans to offset domestic flight fees—up to THB 1,750 one‑way or THB 3,500 round‑trip, with a 20 kg baggage allowance included—through six participating carriers: Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai VietJet.

Strategic Aims: Disperse Tourism & Promote Secondary Regions
With pre‑pandemic tourist numbers peaking at nearly 40 million, Thailand now faces diminished arrivals: projected at 33 million for 2025, down from an earlier forecast of 39 million.

This autumn initiative is designed to steer visitors away from crowded hotspots like Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai, encouraging exploration of cultural and UNESCO‑heritage destinations such as Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Isaan regions, and other under‑the‑radar locales.

Economic Impact & Sustainability Goals
Economic projections anticipate THB 8.8 billion in direct tourism spending, with broader impacts potentially topping THB 21 billion.

This effort aligns with Thailand’s “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025”, tied to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s strategy to elevate tourism as a year‑round economic driver and global tourism hub.

Beyond economic recovery, the campaign promotes more equitable distribution of tourism benefits, boosts local economies, and signals a commitment to sustainable travel, lessening pressures on overcrowded destinations

How It Works
Eligible travelers—only new international bookings entering by air—can claim two free domestic flight tickets (round‑trip or one‑way) with baggage included. Ticket bookings must be made after the campaign launches, as pre‑booked flights will not qualify.

The programme is awaiting final Cabinet approval, expected imminently, with implementation details and booking mechanics to be clarified upon green-lighting.

Broader Implications & Forward Look
This bold move places Thailand among the global leaders in sustainable tourism innovation. It sets a template for how destinations can incentivize visits to hidden locales while bolstering preservation and cultural engagement.

However, successful execution hinges on effective destination marketing, infrastructure preparedness in secondary regions, and thoughtful management of future tourist influx to maintain cultural and environmental integrity.

If properly rolled out, Thailand could shape a more resilient and sustainable tourism model—benefiting both travelers seeking authentic experiences and communities rich in heritage.
