Mumbai–Konkan Coastal Travel Gets a Game-Changer This Festive Season

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India – Coastal travel between Mumbai and the Konkan region is set for a transformation as Maharashtra launches its high-speed Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) ferry service, officially named the M2M Princess, from September 1, 2025. This modern service will connect Mumbai’s Bhaucha Dhakka port to two key Konkan destinations — Jaigad in Ratnagiri and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg — offering travelers a faster, more scenic, and cost-effective way to reach the coast.

The launch is timed perfectly for the busy Ganesh Chaturthi travel season, promising immense relief to thousands of families and commuters who spend hours battling highway congestion during festive travel.

Dramatically Reduced Travel Times

The M2M ferry service will cut travel time between Mumbai and the Konkan region by more than half.

  • Mumbai to Jaigad: Only 3 to 4 hours compared to the usual 8 to 12 hours by road.
  • Mumbai to Vijaydurg: 5 to 6 hours, far faster than the 12 to 14 hours it typically takes during heavy traffic.

With this speed, the ferry not only saves valuable time but also makes weekend getaways and short trips to the scenic Konkan coast more practical than ever.

Festive Gift for Konkan Commuters

Announced as a “festival gift” by Maharashtra’s Ports and Fisheries Department, the service is expected to become the preferred travel option during Ganesh Chaturthi and other high-traffic times. Delays due to weather earlier this year have been resolved, and authorities are ready to operate at full capacity as the festive season approaches.

High-Speed, High-Capacity Vessel

The M2M Princess has been recognized as South Asia’s fastest Ro-Ro ferry, cruising at an impressive 25 knots. It is designed for both passengers and vehicles, offering unmatched versatility for coastal travel.

The vessel accommodates:

  • 656 passengers with four seating categories — Economy (552 seats), Premium Economy (44 seats), Business Class (48 seats), and First Class (12 seats).
  • Vehicles, including 50 cars, 30 two-wheelers, bicycles, and even mini-buses and large buses.

This flexibility makes the service ideal for family vacations, group tours, and even logistics transport.

Transparent, Fixed Fares

One of the most appealing aspects of the M2M service is its transparent and fixed pricing, even during high-demand periods. This ensures that passengers avoid the unpredictable surge pricing often seen with buses and taxis during festivals.

  • Passenger fares:
    • Economy – ₹2,500
    • Premium Economy – ₹4,000
    • Business Class – ₹7,500
    • First Class – ₹9,000
  • Vehicle fares:
    • Car – ₹6,000
    • Two-wheeler – ₹1,000
    • Bicycle – ₹600
    • Mini-bus – ₹13,000
    • Larger buses – rates based on size and seating capacity

Daily Departures and Smooth Connectivity

The ferry will operate daily departures at 6:30 AM from Bhaucha Dhakka, ensuring convenient travel for early morning passengers. Upon arrival at the Konkan ports, there will be a two-hour halt before the return journey.

To enhance convenience, last-mile connectivity is being arranged with dedicated bus services to transport passengers from the jetties to nearby towns and villages. This seamless transfer is especially beneficial for residents heading home during the festival season.

Expansion Plans for Coastal Travel

The M2M ferry is part of a broader vision to expand coastal connectivity across Maharashtra. Building on the success of the Mumbai–Mandwa (Alibaug) Ro-Ro service that reduced a three-hour road trip to a one-hour ferry ride, the state government aims to introduce additional routes in the future. Plans are already underway to connect more destinations, including Shrivardhan, Mandwa, and Goa, creating a robust coastal transport network.

Boost to Tourism and Economy

The launch of the Mumbai–Konkan ferry service promises significant benefits for both the tourism sector and the local economy:

  • Time Savings: Faster journeys mean travelers can spend more time exploring destinations rather than sitting in traffic.
  • Comfort and Experience: Passengers can enjoy air-conditioned interiors and breathtaking coastal views, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
  • Affordability: Fixed fares make this service accessible to a wide range of travelers, from daily commuters to vacationers.
  • Tourism Growth: Easier access is expected to boost tourism in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and other scenic coastal towns, benefiting local businesses.
  • Reduced Highway Congestion: By diverting travelers from crowded highways, the ferry helps reduce road traffic, leading to smoother road conditions and less environmental strain.

Scenic Journeys and Modern Comfort

Apart from its practical advantages, the M2M ferry offers a truly scenic experience. Passengers can soak in panoramic views of the Konkan coastline, turning travel time into a relaxing and picturesque voyage. Whether you’re heading for a weekend getaway, a family holiday, or a business trip, the journey itself becomes part of the adventure.

A New Era of Coastal Travel

The launch of the M2M ferry service on September 1, 2025, marks the beginning of a new era of coastal travel in Maharashtra. By combining speed, comfort, affordability, and efficiency, the service redefines what travel between Mumbai and the Konkan can be.

For tourists, locals, and businesses alike, this high-speed ferry is more than just a transport service — it is a vital step toward a modern, connected, and accessible Konkan coast.
