South Western Railway Launches Special Diwali Trains from Bengaluru to Kollam on Nov 16 & 21 to Meet Surge in Demand

South Western Railway unveils two special Diwali services from Bengaluru to Kollam on Nov 16 & 21, with extra coaches, festival timing & comfort for travelers.

South Western Railway

As Diwali 2025 draws closer, South Western Railway is gearing up to ease travel stress by introducing two special train services between Bengaluru and Kollam on November 16 and November 21. With demand spiking during the festival season, these dedicated services are planned to help travelers reach Kerala’s coastal gem with greater ease and comfort. The initiative underscores Indian Railways’ efforts to accommodate the festive surge, especially on routes that traditionally witness heavy movement during holidays.

Festival-Special Trains: Dates, Timings & Routes

The first of the special services—Train 06561 (SMVT Bengaluru → Kollam Special)—is scheduled to depart from Bengaluru’s SMVT station at 3:00 PM on November 16, 2025. It is slated to arrive at Kollam early next morning, around 6:20 AM, giving passengers a restful overnight journey. The return leg, numbered 06562, will depart Kollam at 10:45 AM on November 17 and reach Bengaluru Cantonment at approximately 3:30 AM.

The second special train, 06567 (SMVT Bengaluru → Kollam Express Special), is set for a late-night departure at 11:00 PM on November 21. It will reach Kollam around 12:55 PM on November 22. The return service 06568 will leave Kollam at 5:00 PM on November 22 and aim to arrive back at Bengaluru Cantonment by 9:45 AM on November 23.

These timings have been crafted to balance overnight and daytime travel preferences—offering flexibility to passengers traveling for the Diwali holidays.

Coach Composition & Comfort Features

To meet the varied needs of passengers, these special trains will be equipped with a mix of classes. The proposed composition includes:

  • 2 AC Two-Tier coaches
  • 3 AC Three-Tier coaches
  • 11 Sleeper Class coaches
  • 4 General Second-Class coaches
  • 2 Second Class / unreserved coaches

This arrangement ensures that both budget travelers and those seeking air-conditioned comfort are well served. While the AC classes offer privacy and enhanced amenities, the Sleeper and General segments provide affordability for the many who travel during this period.

Coaches will be fitted with standard facilities such as sleeping berths, washrooms, lighting and basic provisions. Baggage areas and luggage-cum-brake vans are expected to accommodate passengers with larger luggage. The arrangement is aimed at delivering a balanced travel experience without compromising on capacity.

Route & Key En Route Halts

The special Diwali services will traverse multiple towns and cities across Karnataka and Kerala, offering boarding and deboarding flexibility. Major stops along the route are expected to include:

  • SMVT Bengaluru
  • KR Puram
  • Bangarapet
  • Salem
  • Erode
  • Tirupur
  • Podanur
  • Palakkad
  • Thrissur
  • Aluva
  • Ernakulam Town
  • Kottayam
  • Changanassery
  • Thiruvalla
  • Chengannur
  • Mavelikkara
  • Kayamkulam
  • Kollam

These halts ensure that passengers from across Karnataka and central Kerala can access the service without extensive onward travel.

Booking & Passenger Advice

Reservations for these special trains are already open to the public. Travelers are encouraged to book tickets early, as experience dictates these services will be in high demand. Booking can be done through railway reservation counters or the official reservation system.

Given the festival timing, passengers are advised to arrive at stations well in advance, to factor in crowds, security checks, and boarding logistics. It is also wise to carry valid identification and reservation documents in order. Light packing is recommended whenever possible, though sufficient luggage space is expected.

Wider Railway Strategy for Diwali Season

The special Bengaluru–Kollam services are part of a broader push by Indian Railways to manage festival travel more intelligently:

  • Dedicated special trains are being scheduled across routes where pressure is expected, connecting metros and pilgrimage or holiday hubs.
  • Coach re-composition and supplemental services are being deployed to increase capacity on weekend or holiday stretches.
  • Flexible booking norms and promotional schemes are in place to reduce last-minute rush.
  • Complementary road and bus services in many states are being synchronized to ease connectivity to junctions and final destinations.

Together, these measures are designed to reduce congestion, distribute travel load across days, and provide passengers with more reliable and comfortable options during the festival period.

What It Means for Travelers

For those planning to celebrate Diwali in Kerala or visit back home from Bengaluru, these special trains offer an appealing alternative to often overburdened buses or flights. The overnight departure, strategic halts, and mixed class options make them particularly attractive. For many, this means fewer compromises on comfort and better predictability in travel plans.

Given the surge in travel during festival seasons, such services can often be the difference between a chaotic journey and a well-organized one. Passengers heading to Kollam now have dedicated rail links that mirror demand patterns and seasonal traffic flows.
