Akasa Air Spreads Wings Beyond India: New Destinations in Africa Planned

Less than three years after launch, India’s budget carrier, Akasa Air, is gearing up for new international routes. Under the leadership of CEO and Founder Vinay Dube, the airline is actively studying flights to East Africa and Egypt. Destinations such as Kenya, Ethiopia and Egypt now sit on the carrier’s expansion radar.

Dube highlighted that Akasa’s current fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft offers the range and efficiency needed to open these markets and further establish the airline’s global footprint.

Route Plans: From Middle East to Africa & Beyond

Akasa Air already serves six international destinations including Doha, Jeddah, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait City and Phuket. With this foundation, the airline plans to broaden its scope.

The next wave may include East African hubs and possibly South Asian or Central Asian destinations like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The move is designed to complement its strong domestic network and capitalise on the aircraft’s range capabilities.

Fleet Strategy: Boeing 737 MAX at the Core

The airline currently operates around 30 Boeing 737 MAX planes and holds a clear order book for many more. The aircraft are chosen for their fuel-efficiency and flexibility, making long-haul low-cost operations viable.

Dube expressed confidence in the delivery schedule for new aircraft, citing increased predictability that will support steady growth and new route launches.

International Share Set to Rise

Akasa Air’s international available seat kilometres (ASK) currently stand at about 20 per cent of its total capacity. The airline has set a target of around 30 per cent by March 2027. A rising international share will strengthen its global presence and elevate its status in the Indian aviation sector.

Strengthening Partnerships & Infrastructure

To make the expansion effective, Akasa is working on codeshare and interline arrangements. The airline already has a partnership with Etihad Airways, which helps improve connectivity and gives passengers more seamless travel options.

On the infrastructure front, the carrier recently added Delhi as its third operational base, boosting domestic and international reach through the India Hub. It also announced involvement in operations from the future Navi Mumbai International Airport as part of its long-term network strategy.

Affordable Flying, Sustainable Growth

Akasa Air continues to emphasise its all-economy class configuration, catering to cost-conscious flyers and supporting its low-cost model. By deploying fuel-efficient aircraft and expanding smartly, it aims to keep fares competitive while expanding overseas.

Why Travel and Tourism Stakeholders Should Care

Tourism boards, travel agents and hospitality players should keep an eye on these developments. New direct routes from India to East Africa and Egypt will open fresh inbound-outbound demand flows. For Indian travellers, access to these destinations via a low-cost carrier could boost tourism. For African and Egyptian tourism sectors, it means an additional source of visitors and connectivity.

Forward Look: What to Expect Next

In the months ahead:

  • Route announcements for East Africa or Egypt.
  • Additional aircraft deliveries of Boeing 737 MAX to support new services.
  • Heightened marketing for new destinations leveraging Indian outbound and inbound connections.
  • Broader partnership and codeshare deals to boost international network value.

With these moves, Akasa is positioning itself as a rising global player that can bridge Indian travellers with new destination markets and vice versa, offering tourism stakeholders on either side fresh opportunities to collaborate.
