SriLankan Airlines and the Maldives’ national carrier, Maldivian, have introduced a strategic interline partnership connecting international passengers with 17 domestic destinations across the archipelago.
The agreement combines SriLankan Airlines’ international network with flights operated by Island Aviation Services under the Maldivian brand. Travellers can book eligible international and domestic sectors on one electronic ticket, creating a smoother journey beyond the Maldives’ principal international gateways.
Connections will be supported through Velana International Airport in Malé and Gan International Airport in the southern Maldives. The arrangement gives global visitors easier access to regional airports, resorts, local communities and islands that previously required more complicated booking arrangements.
By simplifying onward journeys, the partnership could distribute tourism demand beyond the country’s best-known resort areas and strengthen economic opportunities across a wider collection of atolls.
One ticket simplifies island travel
Previously, some international passengers needed separate bookings for their arrival in the Maldives and their domestic flight to another island. This could create additional planning requirements, separate payment processes and greater uncertainty when coordinating schedules.
The interline agreement allows participating journeys involving both airlines to be issued under a single itinerary. Travel agents, tour operators and booking platforms can therefore create more complete Maldives holiday packages covering international and domestic flights.
Simplified ticketing is particularly valuable in an island destination where air transport often forms an essential part of the journey. Many resorts and communities are located far from Malé and require a domestic flight, seaplane journey or speedboat transfer.
Closer coordination between the carriers may help passengers organise their connections more confidently. Travellers should still confirm baggage arrangements, minimum connection times and transfer procedures when making a reservation.
Seventeen destinations enter global network
Maldivian will provide onward connectivity to 17 destinations beyond Malé, opening more of the archipelago to passengers arriving through SriLankan Airlines’ network.
The improved access can support established resorts while also creating opportunities for guesthouses, excursion operators and locally owned tourism businesses on less frequently visited islands.
Demand for more diverse Maldives experiences has grown as travellers look beyond traditional private-island holidays. Visitors increasingly seek cultural encounters, diving, marine activities, local cuisine and multi-island itineraries.
Better domestic connectivity can make these experiences more practical. It may also encourage visitors to remain in the country longer or combine several destinations during one holiday.
Tourism revenue could consequently reach more island communities. Increased passenger movement may support employment in accommodation, transport, food services, guiding and recreational activities.
Malé and Gan become connecting gateways
Velana International Airport will remain a central connecting point under the partnership. The airport serves Malé and provides access to many of the Maldives’ largest tourism zones.
Gan International Airport adds an important southern gateway. Its inclusion can improve connectivity for visitors travelling to Addu Atoll and surrounding parts of the southern archipelago.
Using both Malé and Gan creates greater flexibility and may reduce the need for some passengers to route every journey through the capital region. It also strengthens the potential for multi-centre holidays across northern, central and southern destinations.
SriLankan Airlines operates three daily flights to Malé through its Colombo hub and maintains scheduled services to Gan. These routes provide onward access for passengers arriving from Europe, Australia, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Far East.
Global network supports tourism demand
SriLankan Airlines connects travellers to 130 destinations across 63 countries through its own flights and commercial partnerships. It directly serves 33 destinations across several major international regions.
The scale of this network gives the Maldives access to a broad range of visitor markets. Passengers can travel through Colombo before connecting to Malé or Gan and continuing with Maldivian to their final island destination.
Dimuthu Tennakoon, Head of Commercial at SriLankan Airlines, said the partnership represents an important milestone in expanding the carrier’s regional footprint and improving convenience.
He added that integrating SriLankan Airlines’ international network with Maldivian’s domestic operations would unlock greater access across the Maldives while creating commercial growth opportunities.
Nayomi Tennakoon, SriLankan Airlines’ Manager Maldives, said the agreement would allow travellers to experience the archipelago’s diversity through a single, seamless itinerary.
Tourism and business travel gain new options
The agreement is expected to benefit leisure passengers, families and business travellers. Companies operating across different islands may gain more practical access, while residents can connect through Colombo to destinations across SriLankan Airlines’ wider network.
Travel agents and tour operators can also build more comprehensive itineraries without requiring customers to manage unrelated flight reservations.
For the Maldives tourism sector, the partnership supports a broader strategy of improving access across the country rather than concentrating visitors around one gateway.
