Zostel Launches Zo Selections in Jaipur, Transforming Backpacker Culture into Premium Social Stays

Zostel has entered India’s premium accommodation market with the launch of Zo Selections, a new social-hospitality concept created under parent company Zo World.

The new vertical has debuted with Zo Selections Jaipur by Zostel, offering stylish private rooms and higher-end accommodation categories, including suites with jacuzzis. However, the concept retains the community interaction and shared experiences that helped establish Zostel’s backpacker identity.

Zo Selections represents an important shift for the company as it expands beyond hostels and alternative accommodation. Rather than recreating a conventional luxury hotel, the brand aims to combine privacy, upgraded comfort and locally influenced design with meaningful social connections.

Following Jaipur, Zo Selections plans to open in Gokarna. Further properties are being prepared for Mussoorie, Pench and Lonavla, giving the emerging portfolio exposure across cultural, coastal, mountain, wildlife and short-break destinations.

Zostel grows with its original travellers

Zostel began with a 24-bed hostel in Jodhpur in 2013. Since then, it has grown to approximately 5,000 beds across India, Nepal and Thailand while facilitating more than five million traveller journeys.

Many guests who discovered Zostel during its early years are now travelling differently. Former backpackers increasingly take holidays with partners, families, friends and professional teams. They may expect greater comfort and privacy, yet still value social interaction, local discovery and a sense of belonging.

Zo Selections has been designed around that evolution. The new format allows Zo World to maintain its relationship with existing travellers as their lifestyles, budgets and accommodation preferences change.

Aviral Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of Zostel, said the company did not want to create another five-star hotel defined only by its branding. Instead, it wanted to develop the next chapter of a community built over 13 years.

He said the traveller who first encountered Zostel in Jodhpur may now be organising family holidays or corporate offsites. However, that guest still seeks people and shared experiences rather than only a room.

Social experiences distinguish the concept

India’s premium hotel sector frequently promotes seclusion, exclusivity and highly private experiences. Zo Selections is pursuing a different approach by placing intentional social interaction at the centre of each stay.

Bonfire gatherings, workshops and sundowner sessions will give guests opportunities to connect. These activities are intended for entrepreneurs, couples, families and corporate groups rather than only traditional backpackers.

The concept gives travellers control over how they engage. Visitors may choose to relax privately, work in a shared environment, explore the destination or participate in community activities.

This flexibility reflects wider changes in Indian travel behaviour. Leisure trips, workations, group escapes and company retreats increasingly overlap, creating demand for properties capable of supporting productivity and recreation within the same stay.

By catering to several travel purposes, Zo Selections could attract guests who appreciate premium comforts but find conventional upscale hotels less socially engaging.

Jaipur property celebrates Pink City identity

At Zo Selections Jaipur, the design draws upon the colours and character associated with Rajasthan’s Pink City. Soft pastel shades, spacious communal areas and dedicated work zones create an environment intended to balance leisure with productivity.

The destination’s cultural appeal makes Jaipur a strategic starting point for the brand. The city attracts domestic and international visitors through its forts, palaces, bazaars, architecture, crafts and culinary traditions.

Amaano, the property’s in-house dining venue, extends that local connection through flavours inspired by Rajasthan. The restaurant provides another shared setting where guests can engage with regional food culture.

Three principles will guide the wider Zo Selections portfolio. Service will anticipate guest requirements, while architecture and interiors will reflect the culture, craftsmanship and character of each destination. Experiences will also adapt to individual travel preferences.

This destination-led model could support local tourism economies by encouraging travellers to explore regional cuisine, activities and cultural traditions beyond their rooms.

Expansion spans diverse Indian destinations

The planned Gokarna property will introduce the concept to India’s coastal tourism market. It will emphasise slower and more immersive travel, matching the destination’s beaches and relaxed atmosphere.

Mussoorie will give the brand access to a popular Himalayan leisure market. Pench can connect guests with nature and wildlife experiences, while Lonavla offers strong potential for weekend escapes and corporate retreats near major western Indian cities.

Zo Selections joins an expanding collection of Zo World accommodation formats. Zostel Plus delivers an upgraded hostel experience with design-led spaces and organised activities. Zostel Homes focuses on nature-oriented stays, while Zo House operates as a permanent network of hacker houses.

Each model targets different accommodation and lifestyle requirements while retaining community as a central theme.

Zo World targets next growth milestone

The launch follows a period of wider expansion for the company. Zostel recently opened its 100th property and entered the international market with a location in Phuket.

Its reach has grown further through Safestay, providing exposure across more than 20 European destinations. Zo World is now working toward a portfolio of 10,000 beds.

Within that strategy, Zo Selections gives the business a route into premium hospitality without abandoning its original identity. Its success will depend on whether the company can deliver higher service and design standards while preserving authentic connections among guests.

Starting in Jaipur, the brand is betting that the next generation of premium travellers will seek more than privacy. They will also want community, destination character and shared experiences that turn an upscale room into a memorable journey.
