India Climate Transformation Accelerates as Google Expands Solar and AI Innovation

India’s transition towards a more climate-resilient economy is gaining momentum as Google expands five sustainability initiatives spanning solar energy, agriculture and green innovation.

The technology company is extending its Solar API to cover more than 300 million rooftops across India. It is also supporting a 150-megawatt solar project in Rajasthan, climate-smart rice cultivation and new environmental technology programmes.

Together, the initiatives combine artificial intelligence, satellite imagery and local partnerships. They aim to reduce barriers to clean energy, conserve water, limit agricultural emissions and accelerate the development of practical climate solutions.

The programmes could also benefit India’s visitor economy over time. Cleaner electricity, more resilient farming and improved environmental management can support hotels, tourism businesses, rural communities and destinations facing growing climate pressures.

Solar API reaches 300 million rooftops

Google’s Solar API can now generate rooftop insights for more than 300 million properties across India. Globally, the technology covers over 1.2 billion buildings.

The system uses AI, imagery and environmental data to estimate a building’s rooftop solar potential. Installers can assess roof geometry, sunlight exposure and expected energy generation before conducting an initial physical inspection.

Traditional surveys can require substantial time and repeated site visits. Digital assessments may help installers prepare designs and financial proposals faster while reducing early planning costs.

Indian solar operations platform Solar Ladder is integrating the information into its workflow. OpenSolar also uses Solar API data to model rooftop conditions and prepare system proposals.

For hotels and tourism businesses, faster assessments could simplify decisions about installing renewable energy. Accommodation properties often have significant electricity requirements because of cooling, lighting, kitchens and guest facilities.

Greater rooftop solar adoption could therefore help tourism operators manage energy use while responding to traveller demand for more responsible accommodation.

Rajasthan gains new solar investment

Google has entered a long-term agreement with ReNew Power covering a new 150-megawatt solar generation project in Rajasthan.

Under the agreement, Google will receive environmental attributes linked to the clean electricity generated. These will help the company address electricity-related emissions across its value chain.

Google said the development is its second India-based solar project focused on Scope 3 emissions. Together, the two projects are expected to add 300 megawatts of solar generation capacity to India’s expanding electricity grid.

Rajasthan provides strong conditions for large-scale solar development because of its sunlight availability and open landscapes. Continued renewable investment can support cleaner industrial growth and strengthen electricity infrastructure.

Reliable clean energy also matters to tourism. Resorts, transport providers and attractions increasingly need stable power while working to reduce the environmental impact of their operations.

Satellite technology supports rice farmers

Google is also partnering with Mitti Labs on an agricultural programme expected to help tens of thousands of smallholder rice farmers in Telangana.

The project will encourage Alternate Wetting and Drying. Under this method, farmers periodically drain and reflood rice fields instead of keeping them continuously submerged.

This approach can conserve water while reducing methane emissions linked to rice cultivation. Google estimates that the programme could save billions of gallons of water once fully implemented while maintaining crop productivity.

Satellite monitoring and digital tools will help track farming practices and environmental outcomes. Better verification can also support the expansion of climate finance and incentive programmes.

The benefits extend beyond agriculture. Rural landscapes, regional cuisine and farming communities form an important part of India’s cultural tourism offering. Greater climate resilience can help protect the livelihoods and food systems that support those visitor experiences.

Climate centre expands green research

The Google Center for Climate Technology is broadening its support for environmental innovation in India.

Created with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the centre operates through the Manthan platform. It is designed to accelerate decarbonisation, climate research and workforce development.

Its first group of projects focuses on green skills and lower-carbon construction materials. New areas will cover water stewardship, electronic waste, battery recycling and circular approaches to resource use.

Eligible projects can receive support to develop data-driven solutions with the potential for wider deployment. The programme aims to move promising research towards practical applications across communities and industries.

Low-carbon building materials could have particular relevance for hotels, airports and tourism infrastructure. Water-management technology may also help destinations where visitor demand places additional pressure on limited resources.

Indian startups join global climate programme

Four Indian companies have joined the inaugural Google DeepMind Accelerator: AI for the Planet.

Terrastack and Varaha Climate use technology to provide smallholder farmers with land intelligence, regenerative agriculture support and access to verified carbon programmes.

Farmers for Forests and Climitra Carbon apply geospatial AI, drones and satellite models to agroforestry and biodiversity restoration. Their work also includes converting invasive biomass into biochar.

These projects demonstrate how Indian startups are using AI to address environmental challenges at local scale. Their solutions may improve land monitoring, carbon measurement and ecological restoration while creating new rural opportunities.

Google’s latest initiatives position India as an important testing ground for climate technology that can operate across large and diverse communities.
