Minor Hotels and Paraguay’s Grupo Petra have signed two agreements that will bring a 116-room NH hotel to Asunción and create a framework for further projects. The four-star hotel is expected to open in late 2029.
One agreement covers management of the planned hotel. The other allows Grupo Petra to identify and develop opportunities that Minor Hotels may consider for its NH, NH Collection and Tivoli brands. Together, they extend the companies’ existing relationship in Paraguay.
The plan could add internationally branded accommodation for business travellers, event visitors and tourists in the capital. Future hotels elsewhere in the country remain possibilities rather than confirmed developments.
Asunción Hotel Targets a 2029 Opening
Construction of the new NH Hotels & Resorts property is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. Its estimated opening in late 2029 will follow a development period of almost three years.
The hotel will stand on Calle Quesada, near Shopping Mariscal, financial institutions and Inter-American Development Bank offices. It will also have access to Mariscal López and San Martín avenues.
Minor Hotels places the site about 20 minutes from Silvio Pettirossi International Airport and 10 minutes from World Trade Center Asunción. Actual journey times will depend on traffic and travel conditions.
Plans include a rooftop restaurant and bar, an outdoor pool and a gym. The hotel will also provide 244 square metres of meeting and event space.
Those facilities give the property a role beyond overnight stays. Corporate guests could use it for meetings, while the restaurant and event areas may attract visitors already in Asunción.
For leisure travellers, the hotel would add another recognised brand in the capital. Its location could suit guests who want accommodation near business services and major roads while exploring the city.
Partnership Creates Room for More Hotels
The wider agreement does not commit Minor Hotels to a fixed number of additional properties. Grupo Petra will identify, structure and promote potential projects, which Minor Hotels will assess individually.
The companies plan to examine opportunities in Asunción, Ciudad del Este and Encarnación. Each city serves a different travel market.
Asunción is Paraguay’s main administrative and business centre. Ciudad del Este has a strong connection to cross-border commerce, while Encarnación offers opportunities linked to tourism and events.
The partners may also consider other cities benefiting from investment and infrastructure development. Any future hotel would need to meet the requirements of its proposed brand before moving ahead.
This measured approach matters for travellers and local markets. A hotel planned under an exploratory agreement is different from one with a management contract and construction timetable. The Asunción NH property is the newly announced project with those concrete details.
NH Collection Project Is Already Underway
The agreements build on another development involving Minor Hotels and Grupo Petra. Petra Imperiale, a mixed-use project under construction in Asunción, will include an NH Collection hotel.
The companies expect that development to open in early 2030. Together with the planned NH property, it would give Minor Hotels two differently positioned hotel projects in the capital.
The brands serve related but distinct markets. The NH Hotels & Resorts project will add a four-star option with meeting facilities, while the NH Collection hotel forms part of a larger urban development.
For visitors, more choice across these segments could make it easier to match accommodation to a trip’s purpose. Business meetings, leisure visits and longer stays can place different demands on location and hotel facilities.
Local Knowledge Supports International Growth
Minor Hotels operates or has committed developments at more than 640 properties across 67 countries. In Paraguay, it plans to expand through management arrangements with a local developer rather than building each property itself.
Under the partnership, Minor Hotels brings hotel operations, distribution and brand experience. Grupo Petra contributes knowledge of Paraguay’s property market and development opportunities.
That division of roles supports Minor Hotels’ asset-light strategy. It also gives Grupo Petra access to brands that may attract domestic, regional and international guests.
The proposed hotels signal confidence in Asunción’s accommodation market, but their tourism impact will emerge after opening. Construction schedules can change, and future projects beyond the capital still require separate evaluation.
For now, the immediate development is clear: a 116-room NH hotel is planned for Calle Quesada, alongside the existing NH Collection project at Petra Imperiale. The broader agreement gives both companies a way to explore where internationally branded hotels could serve travellers elsewhere in Paraguay.
