United Airlines has added TBS to its live television offering on eligible Starlink-equipped aircraft, expanding access to baseball playoff coverage. Passengers can watch the broadcasts on individual seatback screens while travelling.
The enhanced live TV service operates across more than 200 aircraft, covering approximately 900 flights daily. It combines Starlink satellite connectivity with programming provided through United’s partnership with DISH.
For sports fans, the addition offers another way to follow important games when flights overlap with playoff schedules. It also strengthens the airline’s wider investment in connected onboard entertainment.
Baseball Coverage Joins a Broader Channel Lineup
TBS joins a channel selection that includes ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, FS1, ESPN, ESPN2 and NFL Network. United’s entertainment offering also includes Thursday Night Football coverage through Prime Video.
The expanded selection gives eligible passengers access to live sports alongside news and general entertainment. Travellers can follow events as they unfold rather than wait for updates after landing.
However, availability depends on the aircraft and entertainment equipment assigned to the flight. Passengers should check their journey’s onboard services before planning to watch a particular game.
The addition increases viewing options, although it does not establish that every broadcast will be available on every United departure.
Early Viewing Figures Show Passenger Interest
United says passengers have watched more than 170,000 hours of live television since the enhanced streaming feature launched last month.
The figure demonstrates early use of the service across equipped aircraft. However, it does not identify how much viewing involved sports or individual channels.
Live programming gives passengers another choice alongside films, recorded television and music. That flexibility can be useful when a journey coincides with a scheduled event.
For holidaymakers, entertainment can make the flight itself more enjoyable. Business travellers may also appreciate following a game or programme between other activities.
Starlink Reaches Millions of Travellers
More than 5.4 million passengers travelled on United flights equipped with Starlink during September. The airline says that represented approximately one-third of its customers that month.
The wider connectivity programme supports activities including streaming, browsing and accessing online services during flights.
United also reports customer satisfaction scores more than 40 points higher on Starlink-equipped aircraft than those using other onboard Wi-Fi systems.
That comparison reflects the airline’s reported assessment. The supplied information does not explain the scoring scale or survey methodology.
Nevertheless, the figures indicate that connectivity has become a significant part of United’s passenger experience programme.
Complimentary Wi-Fi Supports Leisure and Business Travel
United offers complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi to eligible MileagePlus members across cabin classes on equipped flights. The arrangement gives qualifying economy passengers access without an additional internet charge.
For leisure travellers, connectivity can support communication with family and access to travel information. Business passengers can use online services during their journey.
The benefit remains dependent on the operating aircraft having Starlink equipment. Passengers should distinguish between the airline’s rollout plans and the services available on a specific departure.
United expects to complete its planned Starlink installations in 2027, extending the technology’s reach across its operations.
Seatback Investment Broadens Entertainment Choices
Alongside connectivity upgrades, United continues to expand its seatback entertainment systems. The airline expects up to 1,000 aircraft to feature screens before the end of 2027.
Selected new aircraft will also feature 27-inch 4K OLED displays. United describes these as the largest seatback screens offered by a US airline.
Those larger displays apply to cabins featuring that equipment. They do not represent the screen size available throughout the fleet.
United’s entertainment library contains more than 2,500 hours of content, including selections associated with Apple TV, HBO Max, A24 and Spotify.
The combination gives travellers options across live programming, recorded entertainment and audio content.
Connected Cabins Add Value to the Journey
The latest expansion builds on earlier sports initiatives. In August, United and ESPN hosted a two-hour live fantasy football draft from approximately 30,000 feet.
The airline also enabled eligible passengers to stream a major international football tournament earlier in the summer. These activities demonstrate additional uses for improved onboard connectivity.
For tourism, the immediate benefit concerns the journey rather than destination demand. Live entertainment can help travellers remain connected to interests while travelling between places.
United’s next challenge is extending that experience as installations continue. For passengers booking today, the most useful step is checking aircraft features and available programming before departure.
