Naples Airport Adds American Airlines Flights to Charlotte

Naples Airport in southwest Florida has approved an operating agreement for two daily nonstop American Airlines services to Charlotte. Flights are scheduled to begin December 2, 2026, restoring scheduled passenger service after an absence dating to 2017.

The airport authority announced the agreement on October 16, with tickets already available. The route will give residents, holidaymakers and business travellers another option for reaching southwest Florida through Charlotte’s connecting network.

However, flights have not started. The agreement establishes the planned service and operating arrangements, while passenger demand and tourism benefits remain unmeasured.

Two Daily Flights Replace Earlier Proposal

The confirmed launch schedule provides two daily services, updating an earlier proposal for three. A May 13 letter of intent outlined the initial frequency before subsequent preparations advanced.

Ticket sales began in June, allowing passengers to book ahead of the December launch. Travellers should use the latest published schedule when arranging connections, accommodation and airport transfers.

American Airlines last served Naples Airport in 2001. The airport’s most recent commercial passenger service ended in 2017, although other aviation activities continued.

Private flying, flight training, maintenance and emergency services remained part of airport operations. The December plan therefore marks a return of scheduled passenger flights rather than an airport reopening.

Charlotte Connection Broadens Travel Options

The route’s value extends beyond journeys between Florida and North Carolina. Charlotte offers connections to nearly 180 onward destinations, giving passengers access to a wider network through one hub.

Those destinations represent onward options from Charlotte, rather than direct services from Naples. Individual journey times will depend on schedules and available connections.

For visitors, the route could make Naples more convenient when Charlotte fits their starting point and itinerary. Residents would also gain a local departure option for leisure and business trips.

Hotels, attractions and transfer providers could incorporate the service into customer planning. However, additional visitor spending cannot be established before passengers begin travelling.

North Road Terminal Prepares for Passengers

Renovation of the North Road Terminal supports the planned return. Exterior construction, landscaping and site work began in 2024, followed by interior work during 2026.

Interior completion is expected this autumn, ahead of the scheduled December launch. The terminal originally opened in 1981.

Passenger facilities will include a 75-seat waiting area, toilets, an airline service counter and security screening. Baggage claim, offices and rental-car counters also form part of the building.

Airport operations offices and designated private aviation space will remain within the terminal. Together, these facilities support passenger handling and onward transport.

However, waiting-room capacity does not indicate future bookings or the number of passengers who will use each flight.

Aircraft and Scheduling Reflect Local Conditions

The service will use 65-seat CRJ-700 aircraft operated by an airline subsidiary. Operations must remain within the airport’s 75,000-pound maximum take-off weight.

Scheduled flights will also avoid the voluntary overnight curfew between 10pm and 7am. That commitment defines the planned timetable without implying the entire airfield closes overnight.

Published noise measures include preferred flight paths and restrictions on maintenance engine runs. These arrangements reflect the airport’s proximity to residential neighbourhoods.

For travellers, the aircraft and operating conditions establish the service framework. They do not guarantee particular fares, occupancy levels or journey-time savings.

Survey Shows Interest Without Predicting Bookings

A survey of 633 registered voters in Naples and Collier County recorded substantial support for restoring commercial services. Conducted from May 27 to June 1, it found 80.3% supported the return.

Another 77.6% said they would likely use the airport if daily services became available. The published margin of error was 3.9 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

These findings indicate local interest, but stated intentions differ from purchased tickets. The survey cannot establish aircraft occupancy or future international visitor arrivals.

Charlotte’s separate 2025 figures recorded 53.6 million passengers, with connecting travellers representing 65%. Those hub-wide figures explain network reach rather than demand for this particular route.

Travellers Should Compare Complete Itineraries

Passengers should check APF for Naples, Florida, and CLT for Charlotte when searching or booking. They should also compare baggage charges, connection times and ground transport costs.

Anyone requiring mobility or boarding assistance should discuss arrangements with the airline before departure. Confirming the North Road Terminal location will also support arrival planning.

The next milestones are terminal completion and the December 2 launch. Until operations begin, the route offers a bookable future option whose wider tourism contribution remains to emerge.
