Mexico Expands Online Immigration Appointment System to Cover More Visa and Residency Applications

Mexico has expanded its online immigration appointment system to cover additional application categories, introducing a significant procedural change for foreign nationals, employers and businesses handling immigration formalities in the country. Effective November 2, 2026, the National Immigration Institute (INM) has made online appointment booking mandatory for several applications that were previously excluded from the digital system.

The latest update to Mexico’s immigration appointment system covers initial temporary residence visa applications, regularisation requests for foreign nationals with irregular immigration status, and corporate registration applications and updates. The change means that applicants and their authorised representatives must now secure an appointment online before submitting these applications at an INM branch, rather than visiting an immigration office simply to arrange a filing appointment.

For foreign nationals planning to relocate to Mexico, employers managing international employees and companies maintaining their local operations, the revised process introduces another important step in immigration planning. While the expansion is intended to make appointment scheduling more organised over time, the immediate transition could affect application timelines, particularly where appointment slots are limited.

Three Additional Categories Now Require Online Appointments

The INM’s latest expansion brings three previously excluded categories into its online booking system:

  • Initial temporary residence visa applications: Foreign nationals applying for temporary residence through the relevant process must now arrange an appointment online before submitting their application.
  • Immigration regularisation applications: Individuals seeking to regularise their status after falling into an irregular immigration situation are also covered by the new requirement.
  • Corporate registration applications and updates: Businesses handling corporate registration formalities or updating their existing registration details with the immigration authorities must now follow the online appointment procedure.

These additions broaden the scope of the digital appointment platform, which has undergone several updates since it resumed operations in September 2024. The latest expansion also brings certain individual immigration matters and employer-related administrative procedures under a more structured appointment process.

What the New Rules Mean for Applicants and Employers

The change has practical implications for applicants whose documentation is already being prepared. According to Fragomen, the requirement also applies to application packages that had been prepared but had not yet been submitted as of November 2, 2026. Consequently, individuals and companies with pending filings may need to adjust their submission schedules to accommodate the new appointment requirement. Applications could face delays depending on the availability of online booking slots at the relevant INM office.

Previously, applicants or their authorised representatives could approach an INM branch to arrange appointments for these particular application types. Under the revised procedure, that option has been replaced by mandatory online scheduling. This makes it important for immigration teams, legal representatives and employers to review their filing plans before proceeding with submissions.

Appointment Availability and What Applicants Should Consider

At the time of Fragomen’s November 2 announcement, online appointments were available for November 2026. However, availability could become increasingly limited as applicants begin using the expanded system. Foreign nationals and businesses with upcoming immigration requirements should therefore factor appointment scheduling into their preparation timelines. Having the necessary documentation ready in advance and checking available appointment dates can help reduce the possibility of avoidable delays.

The development follows Mexico’s broader efforts to expand digital access to immigration services. The INM resumed its online appointment system in September 2024 after an earlier suspension, initially covering several categories of immigration procedures. Subsequent updates have gradually widened the range of applications handled through the platform.

Mexico’s latest immigration appointment expansion is particularly relevant for international businesses and individuals navigating temporary residence and corporate immigration requirements. Although the digital system is intended to make scheduling more structured, the transition calls for closer attention to appointment availability and filing deadlines. For anyone preparing an immigration application in Mexico, checking the applicable booking requirements before visiting an INM office will be an important part of the process.
