Now São Paulo Metro Line 6-Orange to Revolutionize Urban Travel with Alstom Sustainable, High-Capacity Trains

Alstom delivers new trains for São Paulo’s Metro Line 6-Orange, offering faster, greener travel and connecting key educational hubs across the city.

São Paulo, Brazil – In a major leap forward for Brazil’s public transportation landscape, global mobility leader Alstom has officially delivered the first of 22 ultra-modern metro trains for São Paulo’s highly anticipated Metro Line 6-Orange. The line, one of Latin America’s largest transit infrastructure projects, is poised to redefine the urban commuting experience for nearly 633,000 daily passengers, offering a faster, greener, and more efficient connection between northern São Paulo and the city center.

Manufactured at Alstom’s advanced Taubaté facility in the state of São Paulo, each of these six-car trains embodies innovation, sustainability, and enhanced passenger comfort. With a capacity of over 2,000 passengers per train and a top speed of 90 km/h, the new fleet will play a critical role in easing congestion and improving daily access to some of the city’s most important educational institutions.

Line 6-Orange: A Game-Changer for São Paulo’s Public Transit

Stretching 15 kilometers and connecting 15 key stations, Metro Line 6-Orange will bridge the urban divide between Brasilândia in the north and São Joaquim Station in central São Paulo. By reducing travel time from 90 minutes by bus to just 23 minutes by train, the line is expected to significantly improve urban mobility for students, workers, and low-income communities.

Nicknamed the “University Line,” Line 6-Orange will directly link at least seven major universities, including UNIP and Universidade de São Paulo (USP), along with numerous secondary schools along the densely populated Avenida Paulista. A 2022 study by the São Paulo State Government predicts that over 40% of the line’s users will be students aged 18–24, signaling the line’s crucial role in expanding access to education and economic opportunity.

Alstom Train Design: Innovation Meets Sustainability

Alstom’s new metro trains are engineered with stainless steel carriages, which offer increased strength and reduced energy consumption compared to traditional carbon steel alternatives. This material choice aligns with São Paulo’s broader climate goals, reducing the carbon footprint of daily transit while increasing durability—each unit is designed for a 40+ year lifespan.

Inside, the trains reflect passenger-first engineering. With upgraded HVAC systems, ergonomic seating, wide gangways, and real-time station display screens, the interior promotes comfort and clarity. Enhanced accessibility features and intuitive layouts ensure inclusive transit for all age groups and mobility levels.

The trains also reflect the visual identity of Line 6 with their distinctive orange accents, reinforcing the brand of this vital new corridor.

Alstom’s Lab 4.0: A Digital Design Milestone

A standout feature in the development of these trains was the integration of Lab 4.0, Alstom’s immersive virtual reality platform. This advanced lab enabled engineers to simulate and refine every element of the train’s design—from handrail placement to passenger flow—before physical production began.

Using virtual prototyping, Alstom’s team could incorporate feedback from both technical specialists and real-world user simulations. This early optimization improved design accuracy, reduced production delays, and ensured a more human-centered travel experience.

A Flagship Infrastructure Project for Latin America

Metro Line 6-Orange stands as one of the largest infrastructure investments in Latin America, developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) between the São Paulo State Government and Concessionária Linha Universidade, with construction led by ACCIONA. Once completed, the project is expected to generate over 10,000 permanent jobs, significantly boosting the local economy.

This megaproject also underscores Brazil’s growing focus on sustainable, high-capacity transit solutions to meet the needs of its rapidly expanding urban population. For São Paulo, a city of over 12 million residents, such investments are essential in tackling congestion, pollution, and socio-economic disparities.

Taubaté Factory: Brazil’s Hub for Next-Gen Train Manufacturing

Located in São Paulo state, Alstom’s Taubaté factory is a strategic centerpiece of Brazil’s rail manufacturing capability. Since its commissioning in 2015, the facility has produced over 170 trains for major cities including São Paulo, Santiago, Taipei, and Bucharest.

Its location, near key logistics corridors and the Port of Santos, enables swift delivery and efficient international operations. Notably, the factory played a pivotal role in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, delivering 27 Citadis trams for the city’s light rail system under strict timelines.

In 2022, Alstom announced a R$100 million investment to expand the Taubaté plant, responding to rising demand for urban rail solutions in both domestic and global markets. This expansion enhances Brazil’s position as a rail innovation hub in Latin America.

Building on Alstom’s Legacy in Brazil

With a presence in Brazil since 1955, Alstom continues to lead in mobility innovation. From rolling stock to signaling systems that cover over 6,000 kilometers of track nationwide, the company has played a vital role in enhancing rail safety, capacity, and reliability across the country.

Alstom’s latest contribution to Metro Line 6-Orange solidifies its ongoing commitment to creating smart mobility for a greener future, advancing the broader goals of both Brazil’s infrastructure agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A New Era for São Paulo’s Commuters

As São Paulo prepares to inaugurate Metro Line 6-Orange, the city moves closer to achieving truly integrated and sustainable mobility. Alstom’s advanced trains promise not only faster journeys and better passenger experiences but also a cleaner and more equitable urban future.

Whether you’re a student rushing to university, a professional navigating the daily grind, or a tourist exploring Brazil’s largest metropolis, the Line 6-Orange will make city travel smarter, faster, and more inclusive.
