China Airlines Joins JFK’s New Terminal One in 2026, Elevating Trans-Pacific Travel Experience

China Airlines will move to JFK’s $9.5B New Terminal One in 2026, enhancing passenger experience, connectivity, and sustainable travel between Taiwan and North America.

In a strategic move set to redefine trans-Pacific travel, China Airlines has announced its official relocation to The New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), beginning in 2026. This major transition supports the Taiwanese flag carrier’s expansion plans across North America and promises passengers an upgraded airport experience in one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.

The announcement comes as part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s ambitious $19 billion JFK redevelopment program, which aims to modernize and expand New York’s premier international airport. The inclusion of China Airlines as a terminal partner underscores JFK’s evolving role as a critical gateway for Asia–North America air travel.

A Strategic Leap Forward for China Airlines

Currently operating four weekly flights between JFK and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, China Airlines is positioning itself for a significant upgrade in service and passenger flow. The move to The New Terminal One (NTO) is expected to enhance every stage of the traveler journey—from check-in and security to lounge access and boarding.

“New York City is home to one of the largest Taiwanese communities abroad,” noted Kevin Chen, President of China Airlines. “Our partnership with The New Terminal One ensures we deliver a world-class service that meets the evolving needs of both leisure and business travelers flying between Taiwan and North America.”

Transforming JFK with The New Terminal One

Slated to open in phases beginning 2026, The New Terminal One is a $9.5 billion public-private infrastructure project being led by a consortium including Ferrovial, JLC Infrastructure, Ullico, and Carlyle. The terminal will cover 2.6 million square feet and include 23 modern gates, making it JFK’s largest terminal when completed by 2030.

By integrating cutting-edge biometric technology, smart wayfinding systems, and seamless security checkpoints, the NTO is designed to redefine what passengers can expect from an international airport.

“This terminal will reflect the energy, diversity, and innovation of New York,” said Jennifer Aument, CEO of The New Terminal One. “We are thrilled to partner with China Airlines and welcome its passengers to a truly next-generation terminal.”

Supporting Airline Growth in North America

China Airlines’ expansion into the new terminal is more than symbolic—it marks a tangible upgrade in its ability to grow in key U.S. markets. The airline currently serves six major North American cities and operates more than 40 weekly roundtrip flights from Taiwan. Its cargo division connects Taiwan with 12 freight destinations across North America, further solidifying its role in trans-Pacific logistics.

As a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, China Airlines passengers also benefit from connections to over 1,000 global destinations. By operating out of a state-of-the-art facility, the airline will be able to offer tighter international connections, greater baggage handling efficiency, and an enhanced premium travel experience.

Smart, Sustainable, and Inclusive Travel Infrastructure

Sustainability is at the heart of JFK’s redevelopment. The New Terminal One is designed to achieve LEED certification, using energy-efficient systems, water-saving infrastructure, and eco-conscious materials. The project is also championing diversity and inclusion through its use of union labor, and participation from minority-, women-, and veteran-owned businesses.

This reflects broader trends in aviation infrastructure, where airports are under pressure to not only modernize but also meet rising environmental and social governance (ESG) standards.

Enhancing the Passenger Experience

The new terminal will elevate every element of the travel journey. Passengers can expect:

  • Biometric-enabled gates and check-in systems
  • Self-service kiosks for smoother processing
  • World-class lounges
  • Upscale dining and retail that celebrates New York’s culture and international appeal
  • Real-time flight tracking and navigation tools through mobile integration

China Airlines will leverage these features to reduce wait times, increase flight punctuality, and enhance customer satisfaction, particularly for long-haul flights to Asia.

A New Chapter in Trans-Pacific Aviation

This partnership signals a bright future for air travel between Taiwan and the United States. With China Airlines at the forefront of JFK’s evolution, travelers will gain access to more direct routes, better facilities, and a more luxurious, efficient international flying experience.

The relocation also deepens ties between New York’s global business community and Asia’s high-growth economies, offering increased connectivity for business, tourism, and trade.

Looking Ahead: 2026 and Beyond

When The New Terminal One begins operations in 2026, it will not only welcome China Airlines but also become the U.S. base for Air France, KLM, Korean Air, SAS, and other international carriers. By 2030, it will serve millions of passengers annually, setting a new benchmark for airport excellence.

As JFK transforms into a next-generation international gateway, China Airlines is set to offer a reimagined, future-ready trans-Pacific travel experience. With its expanded North American footprint and the backing of world-class airport infrastructure, the airline is poised to meet growing demand for Asia–U.S. air connectivity in the years to come.
