According to Mark Potter, Etihad’s Director of Loyalty, the concept was simple yet ambitious: “We wanted to engage our Etihad Guest members in a way that not only celebrates our route expansion but also injects fun and competitiveness into travel.”

Participants in the Extraordinary Challenge are tasked with visiting 15 distinct cities across seven countries, including:

  • Hanoi, Vietnam
  • Phnom Penh, Cambodia
  • Taipei, Taiwan
  • Algiers, Algeria
  • Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Medan, Indonesia

How the Loyalty Challenge Works

The grand prize of 5 million Etihad Guest Miles will be awarded to the participant who successfully visits all 15 challenge destinations before the deadline. But even those who can’t complete the full itinerary won’t walk away empty-handed.

Tiered milestone rewards include:

  • 25,000 miles for the first 100 members to visit 5 destinations
  • 100,000 miles for the first 100 members to visit 10 destinations

This format ensures accessibility and participation for travelers of varying resources and availability, democratizing the rewards process. The miles earned can be redeemed for flights, upgrades, hotel stays, and shopping through Etihad’s reward partners.

To join, travelers must be enrolled in the Etihad Guest loyalty program. Members can register for the challenge and begin accumulating eligible travel by booking flights to qualifying destinations directly with Etihad Airways or its codeshare partners.

Potter acknowledged the controversy, explaining that Sochi’s inclusion is part of the challenge’s intent to encourage strategic planning and complexity.

“It’s meant to be ambitious, to stretch the boundaries of where our travelers go,” Potter said. “We’re fully aware that not every destination is easily accessible for every traveler, but that’s part of what makes this a true challenge.”

Nevertheless, some participants have expressed concern about travel restrictions and the feasibility of visiting certain countries, particularly for Western passport holders.
