Etihad Airways Launches Seven New Routes from Abu Dhabi, Expanding Global Reach in 2025

Etihad Airways adds seven strategic new routes from Abu Dhabi in 2025, boosting UAE tourism and expanding with new A321LR aircraft for greater connectivity.

Etihad Airways Launches Seven New Routes from Abu Dhabi, Expanding Global Reach in 2025

Abu Dhabi, UAE – July 2025 — Etihad Airways is accelerating its international expansion with the launch of seven new routes from Abu Dhabi International Airport, reinforcing the airline’s strategic growth and commitment to positioning Abu Dhabi as a premier global transit and tourism hub. This latest move signals a strong comeback for the UAE’s national carrier, following a focused restructuring and renewed commercial strategy.

Beginning in late 2025, Etihad will connect Abu Dhabi to Almaty (Kazakhstan), Baku (Azerbaijan), Bucharest (Romania), Medina (Saudi Arabia), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Tbilisi (Georgia), and Yerevan (Armenia). These destinations reflect Etihad’s focus on serving a mix of cultural, business, religious, and leisure travel markets.

Filling the Gaps as Wizz Air Abu Dhabi Withdraws

Etihad’s latest route rollout comes on the heels of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s withdrawal from several of the same markets. The Hungarian-backed budget airline recently ended operations to six of the destinations Etihad is now targeting, giving Etihad a clear opportunity to reclaim and serve high-demand corridors with a premium offering.

For instance, Wizz Air previously served Kutaisi in Georgia, while Etihad’s launch of Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, provides travelers with improved connectivity and access to more urban and commercial hubs.

Strategic Importance of the New Routes

Etihad’s newly launched destinations have been strategically selected to capture traffic from a variety of market segments. Medina, one of Islam’s holiest cities, offers strong year-round demand for religious travel, particularly during Hajj and Umrah seasons. Baku, a fast-growing destination in the Caspian region, balances both corporate and leisure traffic.

The carrier’s analysis of historical route performance, regional demand, and potential transit flows via Abu Dhabi has been pivotal in planning the relaunch and development of these connections. Etihad’s hub-and-spoke model is optimized to combine point-to-point travel with connecting itineraries, thereby maximizing passenger volumes across its growing global network.

Boosting Reach with the Airbus A321LR

Central to Etihad’s expansion plan is the introduction of its new Airbus A321LR aircraft, designed for long-range narrow-body operations. The airline has confirmed delivery of 10 aircraft by the end of 2025, each equipped with two first-class suites, 14 lie-flat business class seats, and 144 economy seats.

The A321LR gives Etihad operational efficiency while maintaining premium cabin offerings on medium-haul routes — ideal for cities like Bucharest, Tbilisi, and Yerevan, which may not warrant wide-body aircraft but still attract high-yield passengers. This move reflects the airline’s commitment to offering long-haul comfort on traditionally underserved routes.

The new aircraft will also be deployed on existing high-traffic routes such as Phuket, Bangkok, Milan, Paris, Zurich, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen, and Kolkata, allowing Etihad to tailor capacity based on seasonality and customer demand without compromising comfort.

Elevating Abu Dhabi’s Aviation Status

Etihad’s expansion aligns with the UAE’s national aviation and tourism development goals, particularly those led by the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism and Abu Dhabi Airports Company. As the emirate continues to invest in tourism infrastructure and airport modernization, the airline’s broadened network will help drive inbound visitor numbers from Central Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

Additionally, more routes mean enhanced connectivity for business travelers, medical tourists, and leisure passengers, strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position against other regional aviation giants such as Emirates and Qatar Airways.

The UAE capital’s vision of becoming a global gateway is also supported by robust tourism campaigns, such as Experience Abu Dhabi and Go Safe Certification, which aim to promote safe, sustainable, and high-value tourism.

Competitive Edge in a Crowded Market

While competition remains intense among Middle East carriers and budget operators, Etihad’s emphasis on quality service, route efficiency, and premium cabin offerings gives it an edge. The A321LR’s versatility allows the airline to deploy premium-class seating on thinner routes, a feature rarely found among low-cost competitors.

Moreover, the airline is strategically expanding beyond traditional destinations, recently launching services to Atlanta (USA), Prague (Czech Republic), Warsaw (Poland), and Sochi (Russia). Upcoming plans include the addition of Krakow (Poland) and Salalah (Oman) — both growing in popularity among leisure travelers from the UK and GCC.

Boosting UAE Tourism and Economic Recovery

Etihad’s growth is expected to significantly contribute to the UAE’s tourism and economic sectors. According to the UAE Ministry of Economy, the travel and tourism sector contributed over 12% of the UAE’s GDP in 2024, and this figure is expected to rise further in 2025 as airlines like Etihad expand their global footprint.

Increased frequencies and new connections will benefit Abu Dhabi’s hotel industry, heritage attractions, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector. The addition of new routes is also expected to stimulate job creation in aviation services, airport operations, and hospitality industries.

A Promising Future Ahead

As Etihad Airways forges ahead with an ambitious and carefully calibrated growth plan, its role as a vital connector between East and West becomes even more pronounced. The combination of new routes, fleet modernization, and enhanced passenger experience signals a resilient and forward-thinking transformation for the UAE flag carrier.

With its enhanced route map and expanding aircraft fleet, Etihad is not only reclaiming market share but setting new benchmarks for aviation excellence across the region.

For travelers, the message is clear: Etihad is back — and flying further than ever before.
