Southwest Airlines Secures 15-Year Lease Renewal at Dallas Love Field

Southwest Airlines has signed a landmark 15-year lease extension with the City of Dallas, ensuring its continued dominance at Dallas Love Field (DAL) until at least 2043. This long-term agreement cements the airline’s historic connection to the airport where it first began operations in 1971 and positions it for unprecedented growth over the next two decades.

The lease renewal is more than a legal formality—it serves as the foundation for Southwest’s ambitious expansion plans, which include new domestic routes, revived popular destinations, and significant infrastructure upgrades to enhance passenger experience.

A Growing Flight Network for 2026

By 2026, Southwest expects to operate over 200 daily departures from DAL during peak travel periods. With these expansions, the airline anticipates serving more than 10 million passengers annually, reinforcing its position as the largest domestic carrier in the United States.

The airline will expand connectivity from key hubs including Chicago Midway (MDW), Nashville (BNA), Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), and San Diego (SAN), making Dallas an even more important gateway for U.S. travellers.

Reviving High-Demand Routes

Beginning March 5, 2026, Southwest will reinstate twice-daily nonstop flights to two highly requested destinations:

  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO) – reconnecting North Texas to one of America’s busiest tech and tourism hubs.
  • Will Rogers World Airport (OKC), Oklahoma City – improving regional connectivity for both business and leisure travellers.

These routes were previously suspended but are returning in response to strong customer demand.

Seasonal Services Become Permanent

In addition to revived routes, Southwest will make several seasonal services available year-round. Starting in 2026, Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Portland International Airport (PDX), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) will each have one daily nonstop flight from DAL, ensuring travellers have consistent access to these coastal destinations.

New Destinations on the Map

Southwest is also launching a brand-new daily nonstop connection from McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Knoxville, Tennessee, starting March 2026. This new route strengthens the airline’s national network and provides passengers with more options for connecting across the country.

Infrastructure Improvements at Dallas Love Field

The lease renewal guarantees Southwest exclusive access to 18 gates at DAL, allowing it to maintain and grow its market share. In partnership with the City of Dallas, the airline will invest in modernising airport facilities. Planned upgrades include:

  • Expanded gate areas for faster boarding and deplaning
  • Improved passenger lounges and waiting areas
  • Upgraded baggage handling systems for efficiency
  • Technology enhancements for smoother check-in and security processes

These improvements are designed to support increasing passenger traffic while maintaining affordable fares—a hallmark of Southwest’s business model.

The Changing Airline Landscape at DAL

By 2026, Alaska Airlines will exit Dallas Love Field, leaving Southwest and Delta Air Lines as the only commercial carriers at the airport. This shift further consolidates Southwest’s position as the dominant airline at DAL.

With a fleet of over 800 Boeing 737 aircraft and more than 500 new Boeing 737 MAX planes on order, Southwest is well-prepared to handle its expanding schedule.

Boosting Dallas as a Travel Hub

Southwest’s growth benefits not only the airline but also Dallas as a whole. Increased passenger numbers will generate more tourism revenue, support local jobs, and enhance the city’s reputation as a major aviation hub.

The expanded route network will also attract business travellers, making Dallas a more strategic location for corporate meetings and conventions.

Looking Ahead

The combination of a secure long-term lease, expanded flight schedule, and infrastructure investment sets the stage for Dallas Love Field to become an even more important part of Southwest’s nationwide operations. Passengers can look forward to more travel options, improved facilities, and the reliable service the airline is known for.
