Greece: Aegean Islands Face Extreme Wildfire Dangers

Wildfire danger rises across Greece’s southern islands. Crete & Karpathos tourists urged to follow fire safety rules, stay alert & protect fragile landscapes.

Travel Alert

Tourism hotspots across Greece—including Crete, Karpathos, Chios, Samos, and Ikaria—are currently under a very high wildfire alert (risk level 4 on the five-tier national system) as of August 25–26, 2025. Authorities have urged both local residents and international visitors to exercise extreme caution due to soaring temperatures, extended drought, and tinder-dry landscapes.

Why the Risk Is So Severe

This summer, Greece is grappling with record-breaking heatwaves and some of the driest conditions in years—setting the stage for wildfire ignition with the slightest spark. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection and regional bodies have highlighted that surface and air environments across these islands are now more flammable than ever.

What Tourists Must Do to Stay Safe

To reduce wildfire risks and protect both lives and biodiversity, travelers are strongly advised to follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid open flames: No BBQs, campfires, or open‑flame cooking anywhere outside designated and controlled areas.
  • Don’t smoke in or near natural areas: Even a careless cigarette butt can trigger disaster in dry conditions.
  • Steer clear of spark‑producing machinery: This includes lawnmowers, chainsaws, welding equipment, or any tools that may generate sparks.
  • Stay updated: Monitor local government directives, use the Greece 112 emergency alert system, and heed any lockdowns or restricted-access notices.
  • Report fire signs immediately: Call the Greek emergency line (112) at the first hint of smoke or flames to help prevent escalation.

Firefighting Efforts Underway

Authorities have mobilized significant response mechanisms: firefighting units, aerial surveillance, and military and police patrols are actively monitoring vulnerable zones.

Recent Fire Incidents Reflect Urgency

Earlier this summer, a major blaze near Ierapetra in Crete forced the evacuation of over 1,500 people. Reports suggest approximately 5,000 tourists left the area independently amid growing flames.

Planning Travel? Be Alert

While popular islands like Santorini and Mykonos may currently be less affected, the situation remains volatile. Many tour operators have already rescheduled or redirected trips, and embassies—including the Indian Embassy—advise travelers to stay flexible.

The UK Foreign Office notes that the wildfire season in Greece runs from May 1 to October 31. It recommends that travelers understand their insurance coverage concerning fire-related cancellations—packages canceled by operators may be refundable, but personal decisions may not qualify.

Preserve Greece’s Beauty, Ensure a Safe Visit

Beyond personal safety, visitors are crucial in protecting Greece’s treasured landscapes. By respecting fire protocols and staying informed, you contribute to preserving the stunning natural and cultural heritage that draws millions each year.

Plan wisely, remain vigilant, and enjoy Greece safely—not at the cost of its environment or your well-being.
