NATO Summit 2025 in The Hague: Travel Disruptions, Flight Cancellations Across the Netherlands you need to know

Major travel disruptions expected in the Netherlands during NATO Summit 2025 in The Hague, including road closures, public transport delays, and flight cancellations.

THE HAGUE – June 2025 — As the Netherlands hosts the NATO Summit for the first time, authorities are rolling out one of the largest security operations in Dutch history. Scheduled for June 24–25, the summit in The Hague’s World Forum will bring together dozens of world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as thousands of diplomats, security officials, and media representatives.

While the event marks a significant diplomatic milestone for the Netherlands, it also brings unprecedented transport and mobility disruptions, affecting road traffic, public transport, and air travel across the Randstad region — which includes Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague.

Largest Police Operation in Dutch History Underway

The Dutch government, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) and in cooperation with national and municipal authorities, has initiated an extensive safety and logistical plan to support the NATO Summit 2025.

The operation includes:

  • Motorway closures between key cities
  • Restricted airspace
  • Public transport timetable adjustments
  • Airline flight reductions and cancellations

Residents and commuters have been strongly advised to work from home and avoid the Randstad wherever possible from June 22 to June 26, to ease the pressure on infrastructure and ensure safe travel conditions for summit attendees.

Road Closures and Traffic Congestion Expected in Randstad

Motorists across the Netherlands — particularly those commuting between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague — should expect significant traffic delays starting from Saturday, June 22, as security protocols and convoy movements begin. Rijkswaterstaat has urged people to rely on public transport and refrain from unnecessary travel in the region.

Though trains will operate as usual, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) has not increased its timetable, meaning overcrowding is expected on many routes. Bus, tram, and metro services in The Hague will run on reduced schedulesfrom June 23 to June 25, and travelers are advised to use the 9292 app or journey planners to check real-time service changes.

For those who must travel during this period, municipal authorities recommend avoiding peak travel times and considering alternative routes. The official website of The Hague Municipality will provide live updates on city accessibility, event zones, and detours.

Schiphol Airport Disruptions: Cancellations Affect 100,000+ Passengers

In a parallel move to enhance summit logistics, Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam has been designated as the primary point of entry for official delegations. To accommodate the private aircraft of visiting leaders, one runway has been closed and converted into a parking zone.

Simultaneously, a second runway is undergoing routine maintenance, placing additional strain on the airport’s operations. This dual limitation has led to scaled-back air traffic capacity, prompting airlines such as KLMTransavia, and EasyJet to cancel or rebook over 100,000 passenger flights, as reported by De Telegraaf.

Passengers scheduled to fly into or out of Schiphol between June 20 and June 27 are urged to:

  • Check their flight status regularly
  • Arrive early to account for additional security
  • Avoid driving to the airport if possible, due to heavy road disruptions

Moreover, access to the airport is complicated by celebrations for Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, taking place along the A10 ring road on June 21. With this event overlapping the NATO Summit, traffic restrictions and diversions around Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport will begin as early as June 20 and extend through June 27.

Public Preparedness and Safety Guidance

With security at its highest level, Dutch authorities have implemented temporary surveillance, crowd control zones, and emergency response teams across the Randstad. These precautions are part of a larger coordinated effort to protect both residents and summit delegates from potential risks.

The Dutch Police, in coordination with NATO security forces, will be highly visible, especially in The Hague’s international zone, the A4 and A12 motorways, and key transportation hubs such as Den Haag Centraal Station and Rotterdam The Hague Airport.

Travelers and residents are reminded:

  • To carry valid identification at all times
  • Avoid gathering near official delegations or convoy routes
  • Follow instructions from local law enforcement
  • Use public information portals for regular updates

Local Businesses and Tourism Sectors Respond

While the summit may present challenges for daily mobility, it also offers an opportunity for Dutch tourism and international diplomacy. Hotels in The Hague have reported near-full occupancy, with delegations occupying rooms across a range of luxury and business-class properties.

Meanwhile, local businesses — particularly those near government and diplomatic centers — are adjusting schedules or encouraging remote work arrangements.

Restaurants, attractions, and cultural sites near the summit area may also experience temporary access restrictions, so travelers are advised to plan visits accordingly and consult official sources for updates.

Stay Informed and Travel Smart

As the Netherlands prepares for this historic NATO gathering, residents and travelers are encouraged to remain patient, cooperative, and flexible. Although temporary, the disruptions are necessary to ensure the smooth execution of one of the most high-profile summits in recent Dutch history
