Now India Issues High-Risk Travel Advisory for Cambodia, Canada, and Eight Other Countries

India’s MEA urges citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Cambodia, Canada, Yemen, Myanmar, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Lebanon, and Bangladesh due to severe security risks.

Cambodia

In a significant escalation of global travel alerts, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a strongly worded travel advisory warning Indian nationals against non-essential travel to ten countries identified as high-risk destinations. These include Cambodia, Canada, Yemen, Myanmar, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Lebanon, Bangladesh, and border regions of Thailand. The advisory is rooted in growing concerns over geopolitical instability, internal conflicts, civil unrest, and targeted threats against foreign nationals, especially Indians.

This move by the Indian government comes as part of a broader strategy to safeguard its citizens amid intensifying global crises, ongoing wars, and rising incidents of human trafficking, cybercrime, and political hostility.

Cambodia: Trafficking, Cybercrime, and Job Scam Epidemic

Indian nationals are particularly cautioned against traveling to Cambodia due to a dramatic increase in cybercrime and employment scams. According to the MEA, several Indian citizens have been lured by fraudulent online job offers—especially in the IT and customer service sectors—only to be trafficked and forced into cybercrime syndicates operating from illegal compounds.

The Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh has urged potential jobseekers to only consider verified employment channels and avoid dealings with unregistered recruiters. Cambodia’s inclusion in the advisory underscores its growing reputation as a cybercrime hub in Southeast Asia.

Canada: Anti-India Sentiment Sparks Concern

In a surprising addition, Canada has been flagged due to a noticeable rise in anti-India activities and hate crimes. The MEA warns Indian students and diaspora members of politically motivated incidents, especially those linked to extremist groups and separatist demonstrations. Public clashes and targeted vandalism near Indian religious institutions and cultural centers have prompted the advisory.

Indian citizens in Canada are advised to avoid politically sensitive areas and stay updated through local Indian missions and consulates.

Yemen and Syria: Active War Zones

Yemen remains one of the most dangerous countries globally, beset by civil war, famine, and lawlessness. The MEA has reiterated its strong recommendation against all travel, citing the near-total collapse of healthcare, communications, and security infrastructure.

Similarly, Syria remains an unstable war zone, with recurring airstrikes and terrorism threats, notably from ISIS-affiliated groups. The Indian Embassy in Damascus remains operational but advises immediate evacuation of Indian nationals.

Myanmar: Armed Conflict Along Ethnic Borders

Myanmar continues to experience violent clashes between armed ethnic groups and the ruling military junta. Northern and eastern regions, especially along the China and Thailand borders, are considered highly dangerous. Communication blackouts and road closures are common. Indian nationals are urged to register with the nearest embassy and avoid travel entirely.

Iraq and Libya: Political Volatility and Terror Risks

While parts of Iraq show relative calm, key provinces like Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Salahuddin remain volatile. Terrorist attacks, militia activity, and anti-foreigner violence persist, especially in and around Baghdad.

Libya remains fragmented between competing factions, resulting in widespread insecurity, urban warfare, and unchecked arms proliferation. Both countries remain under “avoid all travel” warnings.

Lebanon: Economic Meltdown and Civil Unrest

Lebanon is currently navigating a political and economic collapse. The MEA warns of regular violent protests, currency devaluation, and public safety breakdowns. Armed clashes and increased influence of militant groups like Hezbollah have heightened travel risks. Indian nationals are urged to remain indoors during protests and stay in contact with local authorities.

Bangladesh: Escalating Political Tensions

Bangladesh has seen a surge in political unrest, including violent protests, transportation strikes, and street clashes. The MEA warns Indian travelers to delay non-essential visits and to avoid large gatherings or politically charged events, especially in Dhaka and other urban centers.

Thailand–Cambodia Border Provinces: Heightened Risk

While Thailand remains largely safe for tourism, recent military tensions along the Cambodian border have led to regional advisories. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has designated provinces like Sisaket, Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, and Sa Kaeo as high-risk zones.

Specific sites including Ta Phraya National Park, Phanom Swai Forest Park, and the Chong Sa-ngam crossing are under alert due to heightened military activity. Indian tourists are advised to avoid these areas and follow updates from the Indian Embassy in Bangkok.

MEA’s Broader Caution for Global Travelers

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasizes that travel plans must be informed by current geopolitical developments, embassy alerts, and local conditions. The advisory also encourages Indian citizens abroad to enroll in the Global Pravasi Rishta Portal and remain in touch with the Indian Embassies for real-time updates and emergency assistance.
