In a major move to streamline inbound tourism and boost travel in the lead-up to Expo 2025 Osaka, the Government of Japan has officially launched its long-anticipated electronic visa (eVisa) system for short-term tourist visits. Effective from May 23, 2025, travellers from 10 countries and regions can now apply for a Japanese tourist visa entirely online, eliminating the need for embassy appointments and simplifying entry procedures.
This milestone reflects Japan’s broader strategy to modernise its immigration framework, enhance border efficiency, and attract global tourists in a post-pandemic travel rebound.
What Is the Japan eVisa?
The Japan eVisa is a single-entry electronic visa that permits eligible foreign nationals to stay in Japan for up to 90 days for tourism purposes. It replaces the traditional visa sticker with a digital “Visa Issuance Notice”, which travellers must display on a connected digital device at check-in before boarding their flight to Japan.
Printed versions or screenshots of the visa notice will not be accepted at departure gates, a policy designed to ensure real-time verification and security.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
Residents from the following 10 countries and regions are now eligible to apply online through the official Japan eVISA portal:
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Canada
- Australia
- Singapore
- Saudi Arabia
- South Africa
- Brazil
- Cambodia
- Taiwan
👉 Important: Travellers who are already exempt from short-stay visas do not need to apply through this system.
Special Guidelines for Certain Countries
While the eVisa system opens doors to many travellers, there are specific rules for residents of select countries:
- China: Citizens must apply via accredited travel agencies; visa stays are limited to 15 or 30 days.
- Vietnam: Applications must be submitted through authorised tour agencies; limited to 15-day stays.
- India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia, South Korea (except Jeju), UAE: May require submission through Japan-approved agencies unless visa-exempt.
Also, the Japan eVisa is valid only for air travel or scheduled international ferries from Busan or Shanghai.
Application Requirements
To qualify for the Japan eVisa, applicants must meet these conditions:
- Purpose of visit: Tourism only
- Entry type: Single-entry
- Passport: Ordinary passport
- Application: Online only (or via approved agencies depending on residence)
- Visa display: Must show digital Visa Issuance Notice on a live device at check-in
For travellers planning longer stays for work, study, or family reunification, traditional visa procedures through Japanese embassies or consulates still apply.
