Vietnam Tourism Soars in 2025: Multiple World Travel Awards Cement Its Global Spotlight

Vietnam wins big at the 2025 World Travel Awards amid surging visitor numbers, boosting its global tourism brand and accelerating travel growth.

Vietnam Tourism Soars in 2025

Vietnam’s tourism industry is riding a wave of record successes in 2025, powered both by outstanding global recognition and a sharp jump in international arrivals. At the recent World Travel Awards, Vietnam claimed top honors—such as Asia’s Leading Destination and Asia’s Leading Heritage Destination—underscoring how the country’s travel appeal is gaining new momentum on the world stage.

Awards Reflect Global Recognition

In October 2025, Vietnam was declared Asia’s Leading Destination for the seventh time, and Asia’s Leading Heritage Destination for the third time. These accolades showcase the country’s growing strength as a tourism powerhouse while highlighting its deep commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural legacy. The awards send a powerful message: Vietnam is no longer just a rising star, but one of Asia’s established leaders in travel.

Complementing the national wins, several Vietnamese cities and regions also shone individually. The capital, Hanoi, secured honors as both Asia’s Leading City Destination and Asia’s Leading Short Break Destination. The historic town of Hoi An retained its status as Asia’s Leading Cultural City Destination. Meanwhile, the coastal city of Vung Tau (incorporated administratively with Ho Chi Minh City) was named Asia’s Leading Coastal City Break Destination, and Ninh Binh emerged as Asia’s Leading Emerging Tourism Destination. Regional tourist hotspots such as Phong Nha – Ke Bang and the Dong Van Karst Plateau earned top natural tourism awards as well, highlighting the country’s diverse strengths in heritage and nature tourism.

On the urban front, Ho Chi Minh City swept four major awards—in business travel, festivals and events, and tourism authority performance. This underlines how Vietnam’s two most vibrant cities continue to pull global attention with a mix of history, culture, nightlife, and modern infrastructure.

Visitor Surge: Growth That Exceeds Expectations

The awards are more than symbolic—they dovetail with a dramatic upswing in visitor numbers. In the first nine months of 2025, Vietnam welcomed 15.4 million international arrivals—a 21.5 percent rise compared to the same period in 2024. That puts it on track to surpass its full-year target for international visitors. Over the first eight months alone, arrivals reached nearly 14 million, already exceeding half of the yearly goal of 25 million set by authorities.

In the first half of 2025, Vietnam recorded 10.7 million foreign visitors—a jump of about 21 percent year-on-year. That performance was among the strongest globally; Vietnam was cited as one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism markets in that period, alongside Japan. The quarterly numbers reinforce this trend: Q1 arrivals exceeded 6 million, an all-time high, while by May the cumulative total had grown to over 9.2 million, a 21 percent gain over 2024.

Complementing volume growth, revenue from tourism services also climbed strongly. In the first eight months, earnings from travel services topped VND 61.2 trillion (around USD 2.3 billion), representing a 20 percent increase year-on-year.

What’s Driving the Boom?

Vietnam’s tourism resurgence is not accidental. A trio of strategic factors has contributed:

  1. Visa policy liberalization – Vietnam expanded or extended visa waivers for many nationalities, easing access for travelers from Europe, Asia, and beyond.
  2. Stronger promotion and digital marketing – The government has intensified campaigns and partnerships with international travel platforms and agencies to raise the country’s visibility.
  3. Expanded air connectivity – New direct flight routes and more capacity on existing ones have opened access to more markets.

These efforts are part of a broader national tourism development framework (under directives like Resolution 226/NQ-CP) aiming to mobilize local governments, private sector players, and destinations to push harder on attracting foreign visitors and improving service quality.

Challenges and the Path Ahead

While the momentum is strong, sustaining such growth will require careful management. To hit the 25 million international visitor goal, Vietnam must draw more than 11 million visitors in the remaining months of the year—an ambitious push necessitating continued marketing, infrastructure upgrades, and traveler experience improvements.

Environmental sustainability and resource management are also critical. As tourism expands, protecting natural ecosystems—such as coral reefs, forests, and watersheds—and preserving cultural heritage sites becomes deeply important. The balance between growth and responsible stewardship will define Vietnam’s long-term credibility as a destination.

A Bright Future Beckons

The 2025 World Travel Awards represent a milestone in Vietnam’s tourism journey, confirming its evolving image as both a heritage gem and a modern, service-driven destination. With international visitor numbers growing at a torrid pace and an expanding portfolio of world-class experiences, Vietnam is asserting itself as a top tier travel choice.

Looking ahead, success will depend on maintaining momentum: continuing visa and connectivity reforms, deepening international promotion, elevating service standards, and ensuring sustainability. If Vietnam can manage those elements, it is well positioned not only to meet its 2025 targets, but to lay the foundation for decades of growth and recognition on the global tourism map.
