India Greenlights ₹24,634 Crore Railway Multitracking Plan to Boost Connectivity and Tourism

India’s ₹24,634 cr multitracking projects will add 894 km of rail lines, boost freight and passenger flow, and open new doors for tourism across four states.

India Greenlights

In a bold move to strengthen national infrastructure and unlock tourism potential, the Indian government has approved a package of four railway multitracking projects. With a combined investment of about ₹24,634 crore, the plan will add approximately 894 route-kilometres to the existing network, expanding capacity and connectivity across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh.

Major Projects and Route Details

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs cleared the following tracks under the multitracking initiative:

  • Wardha – Bhusawal (Maharashtra): Add third and fourth lines over 314 km.
  • Vadodara – Ratlam (Gujarat & Madhya Pradesh): Third/fourth lines across 259 km.
  • Gondia – Dongargarh (Maharashtra & Chhattisgarh): Fourth line over 84 km.
  • Itarsi – Bhopal – Bina (Madhya Pradesh): Fourth line across 237 km.

These four corridors traverse 18 districts, bringing into sharper focus villages and towns previously underserved by rail. Nearly 3,633 villages—with a collective population of over 8.5 million—stand to benefit from improved rail services.

Freight Uplift and Industrial Gains

A key objective of these projects is to significantly expand freight traffic capacity. The upgraded lines are projected to add 78 million tonnes of freight movement per annum. Commodities such as coal, steel, cement, containers, food grains, and fly ash will travel more efficiently, reducing bottlenecks in transport logistics.

By 2030–31, Indian Railways aims to handle record freight volumes. With smoother operations and less congestion, industries along these corridors can expect lower transportation costs, faster delivery cycles, and improved supply chain fluidity.

Enhanced Passenger Connectivity & Regional Growth

Beyond freight, this multitracking push is poised to enhance passenger travel in multiple states. Faster, more reliable trains will ease crowding, reduce delays, and expand schedules. The added redundancy in routes will help reroute traffic during maintenance or emergencies.

In states like Madhya Pradesh, the corridor between Itarsi, Bhopal, and Bina serves many cultural and natural tourist hubs. Better rail access will link rural municipalities and urban centers, enabling easier movement between multiple regions. Local economies can flourish through increased trade, better market access, and job creation during construction and operation.

Tourism: The Hidden Driver

While freight and passenger gains grab headlines, the tourism dimension is particularly compelling. Places of heritage, wildlife, and natural beauty located along or near the new corridors will gain easier connectivity. A few notable attractions:

  • Sanchi Stupa and Bhimbetka Rock Shelters (Madhya Pradesh)
  • Satpura Tiger Reserve and adjacent eco zones
  • Hazara Falls in Chhattisgarh
  • Nawegaon National Park and tribal landscapes
  • Temples, tribal tourism circuits, forest reserves

With upgraded rail routes, journeys to these destinations will become more seamless, encouraging domestic tourism and regional exploration. Local communities can tap into visitor spend through homestays, guided tours, handicrafts, and hospitality services. In effect, rail becomes not just a means of movement, but a tourism enabler.

Broader Benefits and Environmental Impact

These projects come with a host of long-term socio-economic advantages:

  • Reduced line congestion: Existing tracks often face heavy traffic; multitracking will ease this pressure.
  • Improved reliability: Fewer delays, better scheduling, and faster turnarounds.
  • Inclusive growth: Rural and semiurban areas benefit through better access to markets, jobs, healthcare, and education.
  • Employment generation: Construction, maintenance, and allied services will create significant employment in the regions.
  • Environmental gains: Rail is a greener mode compared to road transport. Reduced fuel dependence and lower emissions are expected.

Furthermore, reduced logistics costs and improved movement of goods contribute to overall national competitiveness.

Challenges & Implementation Outlook

While the plan is ambitious, it faces the usual challenges: land acquisition, environmental clearances, funding disbursement, engineering hurdles (especially in forested or hilly terrain), and coordination among state agencies and rail zones. Timely execution will be critical to realize projected gains.

The government has targeted completion by 2030–31, aligning with its broader vision of rail modernization and national development. If managed well, these multitracking lines will integrate with existing and future corridors, including freight corridors, high-speed and semi-high-speed routes, and urban transit systems.

The Road Ahead for Indian Rail Tourism

With enhanced rail connectivity, tourism at multiple levels—heritage circuits, wildlife trails, tribal regions—can see a boost. Rail tourism packages and themed trains could emerge, leveraging the new network. More states may integrate rail access into their tourism strategies, promoting discovery beyond marquee destinations.

In sum, India’s decision to deploy ₹24,634 crore into multitracking is more than just a rail upgrade. It is a strategic leap connecting freight corridors, passenger comfort, and the potential to unlock tourism across less-explored regions. As the tracks expand, so will opportunity—for travellers, businesses, and communities along the route.
