Konkan Railway Revises Monsoon Timetable: Effective Until October 20, You need to know

Konkan Railway updates monsoon train timings via Ernakulam until October 20. Passengers advised to check revised schedules to ensure safe and smooth travel.

ERNAKULAM, KERALA — The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has revised train schedules passing through the Konkan route in light of the annual monsoon timetable, now in effect until October 20, 2025. This seasonal adjustment is implemented every year to ensure passenger safety during the heavy rainfall season that affects the Western Coastal Railway network spanning Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra.

According to an official statement from KRCL, train drivers—also known as loco pilots—have been instructed to reduce speeds to 40 km/h during periods of heavy rainfall due to low visibility and slippery tracks. Moreover, services will be temporarily suspended if rainfall exceeds 100 mm, with operations resuming only once track inspections confirm safe water levels.

This strategic decision is part of a proactive measure to prevent accidents and maintain operational safety on a route that is known for its scenic but vulnerable terrain along the Western Ghats.

Passengers Urged to Check Train Timings Before Travel

Travelers planning to use trains operating via the Konkan route are strongly advised to confirm train timings before starting their journey. The Indian Railways’ NTES app (National Train Enquiry System) and Railway helpline number 139 are the best sources for real-time train schedules, delays, and rerouting updates.

A total of 26 trains originating from Ernakulam North and South stations run along the Konkan corridor. These trains connect Kerala to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Pune, Ajmer, Indore, Chandigarh, and Porbandar, among others.

Monsoon Travel Safety and Infrastructure Preparedness

The Konkan Railway region is renowned for its lush greenery, tunnels, and bridges. But the same natural beauty also poses unique monsoonal challenges. The heavy rains during June to October frequently lead to track inundation, landslides, and erosion, prompting rail authorities to adopt preventive and safety-first measures.

Over the years, Konkan Railway has invested in early warning systems, drainage improvement, and real-time monitoring of weather patterns using IMD forecasts. These systems are vital in mitigating risk, especially in vulnerable zones near river crossings, embankments, and steep hill sections.

Additionally, the Bridge Management Cell and Track Safety Units have been tasked with frequent site inspections throughout the monsoon window to detect potential hazards and initiate early responses.

Railways Urge Cooperation from Passengers

Indian Railways has requested passengers to arrive early at stations and stay updated on train status.

Travelers are also reminded to avoid walking on tracks, cross only at designated spots, and report flooding or safety risks to station authorities.

Looking Ahead: Safe Yet Scenic Rail Journeys

Despite these changes, the Konkan Railway continues to offer one of India’s most breathtaking train journeys, weaving through misty mountains, deep gorges, and riverside towns. The revised timetable ensures that passengers can safely enjoy the monsoon magic without compromising on punctuality and travel experience.

For tourists and rail enthusiasts, it’s a reminder to plan ahead, pack waterproof essentials, and relish the charm of India’s Western Coast—rain and all.
