Coaches Repurposed for Senior Safety

Under the scheme, Western Railway has converted the luggage compartments of 105 non-air-conditioned trains—comprising 90 twelve-car and 15 fifteen-car rakes—into dedicated senior citizen coaches. Positioned as the seventh coach from the Churchgate end, each compartment accommodates 13 comfortable seats with standing space for up to 91 passengers.

Previously, only 14 seats were reserved for senior citizens across the third and twelfth coaches of each train, often leaving elderly commuters struggling during crowded peak hours. With the revamped design, Western Railway ensures that senior citizens are no longer left standing or competing for general seating.

This rollout, scheduled for completion within the next year, is backed by a ₹5.4 crore (USD 645,000) investment. It signals a long-overdue focus on commuter safety and passenger-specific infrastructure improvements.

The petition called for dedicated facilities for elderly commuters, similar to those already mandated for passengers with disabilities. Similarly, Ms. Sarita Deshpande, 74, expressed gratitude for the clear signage and added comfort. “It’s the first time in years that I’ve felt like I’m traveling with dignity,” she adds.
