Tanzania Triumphs at World Travel Awards 2025, Named Africa’s Leading Destination, all you need to know

Tanzania wins 27 awards at the World Travel Awards 2025 and will host the 2026 global ceremony, cementing its status as Africa’s top tourism destination.

Tanzania has ascended to new heights on the international tourism stage, winning an unprecedented 27 accolades at the prestigious World Travel Awards (WTA) 2025 and earning the honor to host the global ceremony in 2026. The East African nation, known for its majestic wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, showcased its tourism excellence in front of the world—setting a new benchmark for destination recognition in Africa.

This year marked the first time Tanzania hosted the WTA Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony, held in Arusha from June 28 to 30. The event brought together tourism professionals, government leaders, and global media, spotlighting Tanzania’s vast appeal—from the plains of the Serengeti to the spice-scented alleys of Zanzibar.

A Historic Milestone for Tanzanian Tourism

Dr. Pindi Chana, Tanzania’s Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, hailed the historic wins as a resounding testament to the country’s evolving stature as a premier international destination. “This recognition goes beyond borders. It affirms Tanzania’s commitment to excellence, community development, and sustainable tourism,” she stated.

Among the 60 awards presented at the regional ceremony, Tanzania secured 27—including the coveted title of Africa’s Leading Tourist Destination. The Tanzania Tourist Board also won Africa’s Leading Tourist Board, applauding its vigorous international marketing campaigns and growing digital footprint.

Natural Wonders Earn Global Applause

Tanzania’s world-famous national parks earned standout recognition. Serengeti National Park, home to the Great Migration and the Big Five, was awarded Africa’s Leading Big Five National Park. Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, clinched the title of Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction. Meanwhile, Tarangire National Park, noted for its elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, was celebrated as Africa’s Leading Elephant Park.

New to the spotlight, Kitulo National Park—often dubbed the “Serengeti of Flowers”—won Africa’s Leading Honeymoon Destination, highlighting the country’s diverse romance tourism offerings.

Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam also received accolades as Africa’s Leading Airport for Tourism Activities, reflecting Tanzania’s major improvements in air connectivity and traveler experience.

Strategic Leadership and Promotion

The impressive win follows several strategic initiatives spearheaded by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has consistently prioritized tourism development as a national economic driver. Her 2022 promotional campaign, Tanzania: The Royal Tour, featured her personally guiding international audiences through the country’s top attractions. The documentary aired globally and significantly boosted Tanzania’s tourism visibility.

Under her administration, the tourism budget has increased, infrastructure projects have accelerated, and public-private partnerships have flourished. These enhancements have translated into higher arrivals and improved guest satisfaction, propelling the country into the global spotlight.

A Model for Sustainable Tourism

Tanzania’s tourism vision is anchored in sustainability. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, the sector contributes 17.2% to GDP, employs over 3.6 million Tanzanians (directly and indirectly), and accounts for 25% of foreign exchange earnings. The government has reinforced conservation laws, prioritized eco-tourism investments, and incentivized community-based tourism enterprises.

Minister Chana emphasized the importance of inclusivity: “Our approach ensures tourism is a shared success—benefiting the environment, enriching communities, and elevating guest experiences.”

National parks are managed in collaboration with TANAPA and local communities to ensure wildlife protection, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation. These efforts enhance visitor engagement while protecting iconic habitats like Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Manyara, Selous Game Reserve, and Ruaha.

Looking Ahead: 2026 Global Ceremony in Tanzania

Further cementing its leadership, the World Travel Awards organization announced that Tanzania will host the global Grand Final Ceremony in 2026. This will be only the second time the event is held on African soil. The announcement brings immense pride to Tanzanians and global attention to the country’s tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) capabilities.

“This milestone isn’t just a celebration—it’s a call to elevate our standards and readiness for global tourism leadership,” added Dr. Chana.

Rising Global Demand for Tanzanian Travel

Tanzania welcomed over 1.8 million international tourists in 2024, a 19% increase from the previous year, according to the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics. The government is targeting 5 million annual tourist arrivals by 2027 and aims to increase tourism revenue from $3 billion to $6 billion.

Top source markets include the United States, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, France, and South Africa. Additionally, new direct air links via Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Air Tanzania, and Turkish Airlines are making it easier for travelers to access Tanzania’s top destinations.

A Bright Future Beckons

With its 2025 WTA wins and upcoming role as host of the 2026 global ceremony, Tanzania is poised for exponential tourism growth. The nation’s blend of ecological beauty, rich culture, forward-looking policy, and warm hospitality ensures its place among the world’s top travel destinations.

From scaling Kilimanjaro’s icy summit to tracking lions across the Serengeti, to sipping coconut water on a Zanzibar beach, Tanzania offers an unmatched diversity of experiences. And now, with global recognition firmly in hand, the country stands ready to welcome the world with open arms.
