Assam and Bhutan Strengthen Cross-Border Tourism Ties in Bid to Boost Eastern Himalayan Circuit

Assam and Bhutan explore cross-border tourism opportunities at a recent meeting, focusing on the Eastern Himalayan circuit to enhance tourism ties between the two regions.

Guwahati, Assam – In an effort to strengthen tourism ties between the Indian state of Assam and Bhutan, tour operators from both regions recently met to explore collaborative opportunities for boosting cross-border tourism. The focus was particularly on promoting the eastern circuit of Bhutan, a region known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and historical sites.

The discussions took place during the 15th Annual General Body Meeting and Convention of the Tour Operators Association of Assam (TOAA), which was held in Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan, on June 20, 2025. This event, organized at the invitation of the Royal Bhutanese Consulate General in Guwahati, attracted around 100 members from Assam’s tourism sector, including key tour operators, hoteliers, and officials from both Bhutan and Assam.

Key Objectives of the Assam-Bhutan Tourism Collaboration

The primary aim of the meeting was to create a structured plan for promoting tourism between Assam and Bhutan, with a special emphasis on the Eastern Bhutan tourism circuit. Known for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and serene environment, the eastern part of Bhutan has seen growing interest from tourists in recent years. The region’s unspoiled landscapes, including the Khaling Wildlife Sanctuary and Jomotsangkha Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as its vibrant culture, make it an ideal destination for travelers looking for a unique Himalayan experience.

Assam’s tourism department and Bhutan’s tourism officials hope to capitalize on this growing interest by facilitating seamless travel and providing collaborative packages for visitors to explore both destinations. This initiative is expected to increase tourist footfalls in the region and enhance bilateral tourism ties between the two neighboring countries.

A Successful B2B Meet

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the Business-to-Business (B2B) session, where tour operators, hoteliers, and tourism officials from both Assam and Bhutan came together to exchange ideas and discuss potential collaborations. The B2B meet provided an invaluable opportunity for stakeholders to establish business relationships and engage in discussions about mutual tourism development, shared promotional efforts, and joint marketing campaigns.

The convention also featured the launch of a special edition of TOAA’s newsletter, ‘Tea Break’, which highlighted the potential of cross-border tourism between Assam and Bhutan. This publication served as a platform to discuss the growing interest in Bhutan’s eastern frontier and its suitability for travelers seeking a more tranquil, off-the-beaten-path experience in the Himalayas.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects

During the event, the Commissioner and Secretary of Assam’s Tourism Department, as well as representatives from Bhutan’s National Assembly and Samdrup Jongkhar district administration, commended the efforts of TOAA in building a conducive environment for cross-border tourism development. The participants lauded the collaborative spirit between Assam and Bhutan, noting that both regions stood to benefit significantly from enhancing their tourism connections.

As part of their broader strategy, both Assam and Bhutan are working on improving infrastructure, accessibility, and cultural exchanges that will further support tourism growth. The Assam government’s tourism department has pledged to support this collaboration, emphasizing the importance of developing tourism-related infrastructure, including better transport connectivity, hospitality services, and joint promotional campaigns. These efforts are expected to boost local economies, create jobs, and promote cultural awareness among tourists.

Assam and Bhutan’s Growing Tourism Relationship

Bhutan and Assam have long shared a cultural and historical bond, and this collaboration marks a significant step forward in strengthening the tourism ties between the two regions. Assam is known for its vibrant tea gardens, rich Brahmaputra River heritage, and cultural diversity, while Bhutan is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, including Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery) and its commitment to Gross National Happiness. Together, these destinations offer a unique combination of nature, spirituality, and culture that is increasingly attracting both domestic and international visitors.

With Bhutan continuing to focus on sustainable tourism and Assam embracing its potential as a gateway to the Himalayas, the two regions are well-positioned to become a key tourism circuit for visitors in the coming years. This partnership will not only benefit the tourism sectors of both countries but will also encourage cross-cultural exchange, promote sustainable travel, and increase overall visitor satisfaction.

Looking Ahead: Tourism Growth Prospects

The future of cross-border tourism between Assam and Bhutan looks promising, with both regions committed to improving infrastructure, enhancing accessibility, and leveraging their cultural and natural resources. By continuing to focus on promoting eco-tourism, heritage tourism, and adventure tourism, the two regions are poised to become important players in the growing Southeast Asian tourism market.

With international tourists increasingly seeking authentic, immersive experiences, the Assam-Bhutan tourism initiative offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and sustainable tourism practices. As both regions continue to collaborate and innovate, they will undoubtedly attract more visitors and build long-term relationships with travelers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience.
