Macao’s 2025 Gastronomy Festival to Unite 34 UNESCO Cities in a Global Celebration of Culinary Heritage
Macao is preparing to welcome the world to a feast of culture, cuisine, and creativity this July as it hosts the “2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” from July 11 to 20 at the iconic Macau Fisherman’s Wharf. Organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the event promises an unparalleled global culinary celebration under the theme “Spices and Herbs.”
This year’s edition will unite 34 UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy from 21 countries across six continents, making it one of the largest gastronomy gatherings in the Asia-Pacific. By weaving together global culinary cultures, the festival cements Macao’s reputation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and a key player in the international tourism and hospitality landscape.
Global Culinary Cultures Converge in Macao
At a press conference held on June 27, MGTO unveiled a dynamic lineup that includes not just 34 Creative Cities of Gastronomy, but also seven UNESCO Creative Cities from other fields, two Mainland China candidate cities, and the two East Asian Culture Cities of 2025. This fusion of food and cultural exchange is designed to position Macao as a leading destination for culinary tourism and innovation.
MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes emphasized that the festival is “not only about flavors but also about fostering friendship and understanding between cultures through food.” By bringing together celebrated chefs, food artisans, and cultural delegates, the Fest serves as a vital platform for dialogue, cooperation, and creativity in gastronomy.
Three Major Experiences Await Attendees
The 2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest offers visitors three immersive experiences:
1. International Gastronomy Promenade
Running for 10 days, this vibrant culinary marketplace will feature more than 100 booths showcasing delicacies from 14 UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy. Guests can enjoy authentic dishes from Mainland China, Southeast Asia, Portugal, and—for the first time—Portuguese-speaking countries such as Brazil and Mozambique.
To accommodate growing demand, the Promenade will include 1,000 dining seats across five themed zones, a 42% increase from the previous year. Daily entertainment will further enhance the experience, from Portuguese folk dances and street performances to live music and interactive activities for families.
2. City of Gastronomy Showcase
The culinary centerpiece of the festival, this showcase will host over 60 live cooking demonstrations from chefs representing 28 Creative Cities. Emphasizing the theme “Spices and Herbs,” each session will explore how natural flavorings define regional cuisines—from saffron-laced dishes of Iran to herb-infused Thai curries and Mediterranean delicacies.
Running daily from 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., the showcase offers food enthusiasts a rare opportunity to observe culinary artistry up close and taste creations that reflect deep-rooted traditions and modern interpretations.
3. International Gastronomy Forum, Macao
On July 14, thought leaders and representatives from 30 cities will gather at the Convention and Exhibition Centre of Macau Fisherman’s Wharf to engage in high-level conversations around the festival’s theme. “The Spice of Life: Macao’s Culinary Connections” will be the focus of keynote addresses and panel discussions, exploring how spices and herbs have influenced global food cultures, wellness, and heritage preservation.
Accessibility and Outreach for a Seamless Visitor Experience
To facilitate easy access to the venue, MGTO will offer free shuttle bus services on three routes that connect key city points, including the Border Gate, Taipa Central Park, and Cotai’s major integrated resorts. Services will operate daily from 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with extended hours on weekends until 11:30 p.m.
Additionally, MGTO has launched a multi-channel marketing campaign targeting regional and international audiences. From social media promotions on WeChat and Instagram to influencer livestreams and advertising at Hong Kong International Airport, the campaign is designed to position Macao as a must-visit destination in July 2025.
Interagency Coordination for Festival Excellence
Ensuring a smooth event experience, MGTO is working closely with city departments, including the Municipal Affairs Bureau, Public Security Police Force, and Labour Affairs Bureau. Their collaborative efforts will address logistics, crowd management, hygiene standards, and sustainability, further enhancing Macao’s ability to host world-class events.
Culinary Diplomacy at Its Finest
The 2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest is more than just a food festival—it’s a celebration of culinary diplomacy and creative economy. It reinforces Macao’s status as a cosmopolitan destination where East meets West, and where food becomes a powerful language of connection.
With spices and herbs as its aromatic heart, this global event promises to delight the senses and ignite conversations across cultures. For locals, tourists, and food lovers alike, Macao this July will be a destination of flavor, friendship, and unforgettable experiences.
