China Expands Global Air Travel With Qatar Airways Through Landmark Codeshare Agreement

China and Qatar Airways strengthen global connectivity with a new codeshare agreement, boosting tourism, trade, and seamless international travel.

China Expands Global

China has taken a major step toward expanding its global flight network by sealing a new codeshare agreement with Qatar Airways. The partnership underscores China’s strategic intent to position itself as a central hub for international travel, enhancing connectivity between Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

The codeshare deal allows passengers of both airlines to enjoy greater flexibility, access to a wider choice of destinations, and more streamlined travel experiences. For China, this is a significant move to support its booming tourism industry and facilitate smoother links for business and cultural exchanges across continents.

Enhanced Partnership With China Southern Airlines

The development builds on the growing cooperation between Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines. After signing a Memorandum of Understanding in 2024, the two carriers are now implementing wider codeshare arrangements. From October 16, 2025, travelers will benefit from improved connectivity, increased flight frequencies, and more convenient access to destinations worldwide.

Qatar Airways will place its code on China Southern Airlines’ three weekly flights between Beijing Daxing International Airport and Doha, while China Southern will add its code to 15 Qatar Airways-operated routes. These include key cities in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East such as Amman, Athens, Barcelona, Cairo, Dar es Salaam, Madrid, and Munich.

This collaboration ensures passengers can travel seamlessly across continents with simplified ticketing, smoother connections, and a unified service standard.

Boosting Tourism and Business Links

The expanded network arrives at a time when demand for international travel is surging. For China, the partnership aligns with its broader goals of fostering tourism growth, encouraging inbound visitors, and supporting outbound travelers with greater accessibility to international markets.

The agreement is particularly significant for the tourism industry. By strengthening ties with Qatar Airways, China is opening new gateways for travelers from Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, many of whom consider China an increasingly attractive leisure and business destination. Conversely, Chinese travelers will benefit from easier access to holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, cultural hotspots in Europe, and safari experiences in Africa.

Strategic Timing Ahead of Golden Week

The codeshare expansion coincides with China’s Golden Week holiday, one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Millions of Chinese tourists travel domestically and internationally during this period, making the new partnership highly valuable for easing travel to more than 170 destinations through Doha’s Hamad International Airport.

With China Southern adding Beijing Daxing as its second gateway to Doha, travelers from northern China will enjoy more convenient connections. Combined with existing routes operated by Qatar Airways and Xiamen Airlines, the Doha-China corridor will see 64 weekly flights across eight major Chinese cities, offering passengers unprecedented travel flexibility.

Strengthening Aviation Recovery Post-Pandemic

The aviation industry continues to recover from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with airlines seeking to rebuild and expand their global networks. This collaboration reflects a broader trend where international carriers form strategic alliances to enhance passenger options and operational efficiency.

For Qatar Airways, the deal solidifies its foothold in the Chinese market, one of the fastest-growing aviation sectors in the world. For China Southern Airlines, the partnership enhances its presence in international markets, providing Chinese travelers with easier access to popular long-haul destinations.

Economic and Cultural Impact

Beyond tourism, the expanded codeshare agreement contributes to deeper economic cooperation between China and Qatar. Improved air connectivity supports bilateral trade, facilitates business travel, and strengthens cultural exchanges between the two nations.

China has been steadily investing in aviation infrastructure, upgrading airports, and promoting international partnerships to meet the rising demand for global travel. This agreement with Qatar Airways is an extension of that strategy, highlighting the country’s ambitions to become a major aviation hub in Asia.

Benefits for Passengers

For travelers, the benefits are clear:

  • Wider Destination Access: Passengers will gain access to destinations spanning Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
  • Seamless Connections: Codesharing enables smoother transfers, single-ticket itineraries, and simplified baggage handling.
  • Enhanced Service Quality: Both Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines are recognized for high-quality service, ensuring consistent comfort across journeys.
  • Flexibility and Frequency: Increased weekly flights and additional gateways provide passengers with more travel options tailored to their schedules.

A Milestone in Global Aviation

The strengthened codeshare agreement between China Southern Airlines and Qatar Airways is more than a business arrangement—it represents a significant milestone in global aviation. By joining forces, the two carriers are shaping a future where travelers can expect broader access to international routes, smoother journeys, and greater convenience.

As international tourism rebounds and business ties deepen, this collaboration positions both airlines at the forefront of global connectivity. It also reaffirms China’s growing role in international aviation, ensuring that the country continues to serve as a vital link between East and West.
