Kampala, Uganda – In a groundbreaking move aimed at transforming the country’s hospitality landscape, MTN Uganda has entered a strategic partnership with the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association (UHOA) to integrate advanced digital infrastructure across the hotel industry. The newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is set to digitally empower over 780 hotels nationwide, propelling Uganda’s tourism sector into a new era of convenience and efficiency.
This collaboration will revolutionise service delivery, streamline hotel operations, and enhance guest experiences—positioning Uganda as a digitally modern, tourist-friendly destination in East Africa.
Digitising Uganda’s Hospitality Sector
MTN Uganda’s initiative aligns with its Ambition 2025 strategy, which aims to deepen the company’s footprint in sectors beyond traditional telecommunications. Central to this initiative is MTN MoMo, the company’s mobile financial service platform, and its enterprise business unit, which provides digital infrastructure such as internet connectivity, cloud solutions, and customer-focused tech tools.
UHOA, representing Uganda’s diverse hotel industry, has long called for digital upgrades. Most Ugandan hotels—particularly mid-sized and rural establishments—still rely heavily on cash transactions and have limited access to modern IT infrastructure. This partnership seeks to address these gaps by enabling digital payments, stable high-speed internet, and cloud-based hotel management systems.
MTN MoMo: Driving Financial Inclusion Through Tourism
One of the key pillars of the initiative is the integration of MTN MoMo as a standard payment method in hotels. Through this system, both local and international tourists will be able to pay for bookings, food, services, and amenities via mobile money, offering a seamless cashless experience.
This marks a significant shift in Uganda’s predominantly cash-driven hospitality ecosystem. The move not only increases customer convenience but also improves transparency, security, and revenue collection for hotel owners. Given the rising global preference for contactless payments—accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic—this transition is both timely and necessary.
Moreover, mobile money adoption will foster financial inclusion, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within Uganda’s tourism value chain.
Enterprise Technology: Enabling Seamless Operations
Beyond financial solutions, MTN Uganda’s enterprise technology unit will deliver a comprehensive suite of digital services. These include:
- Business-grade internet connectivity
- Voice and data communication solutions
- Cloud-based management software
- Wi-Fi access for guests and staff
These tools are set to redefine how Ugandan hotels operate—supporting functions like online booking management, inventory control, staff scheduling, guest communications, and real-time analytics.
Importantly, reliable internet access will also enable tourists to stay connected, share experiences online, and access digital travel services—boosting Uganda’s visibility on global platforms like TripAdvisor, Airbnb, and Google Travel.
Nationwide Rollout & Sector Consultations
MTN and UHOA have committed to a nationwide rollout of these digital services, starting with an assessment of the sector’s specific tech needs. A joint team will consult with hotel managers, tourism boards, and other stakeholders to tailor solutions that match the realities of Uganda’s hospitality market.
Future phases of the partnership will likely involve tour operators, lodges, safari camps, and tourism agencies, enabling a holistic digital ecosystem across Uganda’s entire travel and hospitality industry.
Bridging Uganda’s Digital Divide
The partnership also aims to address the digital divide that plagues many rural and upcountry hotels, which often lack access to essential infrastructure. MTN’s expansive national network will bring Wi-Fi and cloud technology even to remote destinations like Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and Ssese Islands.
These upgrades are crucial as eco-tourism and nature-based travel continue to grow in popularity. Reliable connectivity and digital services will empower rural hotels to compete globally, attract eco-conscious travellers, and offer value-added services like virtual tours and digital concierge apps.
Boosting Uganda’s Global Tourism Competitiveness
Uganda, known as the “Pearl of Africa”, has immense tourism potential—from gorilla trekking and national parks to cultural heritage and vibrant city life. However, its global competitiveness has been constrained by outdated infrastructure and limited digital services.
With MTN’s support, Uganda’s hospitality sector is taking a major leap forward, allowing it to meet the expectations of today’s tech-savvy travellers. The digitisation of tourism aligns with Vision 2040, Uganda’s long-term development plan, which prioritises ICT and tourism as core economic drivers.
Looking Ahead: A Digital Roadmap for Uganda’s Tourism Future
This partnership is only the beginning. MTN Uganda and UHOA have expressed intentions to scale their efforts by training hotel staff, developing customised tech bundles for hospitality providers, and working closely with government tourism bodies to ensure policy alignment and support.
In the long term, this initiative could serve as a blueprint for public-private partnerships in other African nations seeking to modernise their tourism industries.
