New Hygiene Standards at Seychelles International Airport

Air Seychelles has reinforced its commitment to passenger safety and service quality by introducing advanced food safety training for its lounge staff.

Mahé, Seychelles — Air Seychelles, the proud flag carrier of the island nation, has taken a major step forward in ensuring both the safety and satisfaction of its passengers. In April 2025, the airline implemented a comprehensive food safety training program for its lounge staff at Seychelles International Airport, cementing its position as a leader in service excellence in the Indian Ocean region.

This initiative forms part of the airline’s broader mission to maintain the highest international standards in every area of operation, from air travel to ground services. By focusing on rigorous hygiene protocols, Air Seychelles ensures that every passenger visiting its lounges can enjoy fresh, safe, and high-quality food before their journey.

Focused HACCP Training for Lounge Staff

The training involved 31 employees from the Payanke Lounge, VIP Lounge, and CIP Lounge — three key areas that cater to both domestic and international travelers. Led by food safety expert Terry Lablache, the one-and-a-half-day program provided two detailed sessions on the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system.

HACCP is a globally recognized method for preventing foodborne illnesses by identifying, monitoring, and controlling potential hazards at critical points in food preparation and service. Through this training, staff learned to apply preventive measures in handling, storing, and serving food to ensure the highest levels of safety and hygiene.

Raising Hygiene Standards in High-Traffic Lounges

Airport lounges operate under unique conditions — high passenger turnover, varied catering demands, and strict timing. The hands-on sessions addressed these challenges directly, equipping staff with practical solutions for maintaining safe and hygienic food service in busy environments.

From proper temperature control for perishable items to meticulous cleaning protocols for preparation areas, the training emphasized prevention as the best defense against contamination. For passengers, these measures translate to greater confidence and comfort when dining in the lounges.

Empowering Staff to Deliver Excellence

The training also reinforced a culture of responsibility and professionalism among the lounge staff. By learning international best practices, employees now have the knowledge and confidence to manage food safety proactively.

Nicole Mancienne, Head of Commercial at Air Seychelles, praised the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment, highlighting that the program is part of a broader vision to ensure passenger well-being from the moment they arrive at the airport.

Recognition and Certification

Although the official certificate presentation was delayed due to scheduling conflicts, most participants received their certifications during a ceremony at the Payanke Lounge on August 6, 2025. This recognition not only celebrates the employees’ achievements but also reflects Air Seychelles’ ongoing investment in staff development.

A Boost for Seychelles Tourism

For an island nation where tourism is a key economic driver, maintaining exceptional service standards is critical. The enhanced food safety protocols strengthen the Seychelles’ reputation as a premier travel destination, where every detail of the visitor experience — from scenic beaches to airport lounges — meets world-class standards.

By ensuring the safety and satisfaction of travelers, Air Seychelles also plays a vital role in supporting the hospitality industry, encouraging repeat visits, and promoting positive word-of-mouth among international guests.

Air Seychelles’ Legacy and Future

Operating for over 45 years, Air Seychelles is fully owned by the Government of Seychelles and connects the archipelago to destinations across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The airline operates modern Airbus A320NEO aircraft for international routes and a fleet of Twin Otters for domestic connections, including up to 30 daily flights between Mahé and Praslin.

This extensive network not only serves local communities but also ensures that visitors can explore the Seychelles with ease. The airline’s commitment to continuous improvement in safety, service, and sustainability reflects its mission to remain the Indian Ocean’s most trusted carrier.

Commitment to Excellence and Safety

Air Seychelles’ investment in HACCP training is more than a one-time initiative — it’s part of an ongoing strategy to raise operational standards across the board. The program demonstrates that passenger health, staff development, and service quality are inseparable in creating a first-class travel experience.

As the airline looks to the future, it remains dedicated to enhancing every touchpoint of the passenger journey, from the warm welcome at the airport lounge to the smooth takeoff toward a dream island escape.
