Thailand Cracks Down: UK Issues New Travel Warning

UK issues updated Thailand travel advisory highlighting anti-gambling laws, and cultural rules. Tourists face fines and jail for violations.

UK Tourists Alerted to Thailand’s Tough Travel Rules: Drone, Gambling and Public Conduct Laws Tightened Ahead of Peak Season

As the summer travel rush begins, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a new travel advisory for British tourists heading to Thailand, warning of stricter enforcement of drone regulations, zero-tolerance gambling laws, and heightened scrutiny over public behavior and cultural etiquette. The advisory, updated in July 2025, aims to ensure tourists remain compliant with Thailand’s legal framework and respect local customs to avoid serious penalties—including heavy fines or imprisonment.

Thailand, one of Southeast Asia’s most popular destinations for UK travelers, continues to attract millions of visitors with its rich culture, vibrant cities, and tropical islands. However, authorities are now doubling down on the enforcement of longstanding laws amid a rise in incidents involving foreign visitors unaware of local rules.

Flying Drones in Thailand Without Registration Is a Criminal Offense

One of the most emphasized changes in the advisory involves drone usage. Any drone brought into or purchased in Thailand must be registered with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), regardless of its intended use. Even recreational or hobbyist drone pilots must comply with the rule within 30 days of arrival or purchase.

Failure to register a drone can result in a fine of up to 100,000 Thai baht (approximately £2,200) or a jail term of up to five years, or both. Drone registration is also mandatory for those wishing to capture aerial footage near popular tourist areas, temples, or beaches. Several zones have designated no-fly areas, including around royal palaces, airports, and national parks.

Tourists are advised to avoid bringing drones unless they are fully prepared to register and comply with Thai aviation regulations.

Gambling Remains Strictly Prohibited in Thailand

Despite the perception of relaxed holiday settings, gambling in any form remains illegal across Thailand, including informal card games or betting on sports matches. Tourists found participating in unlicensed gambling operations—including private games or underground casinos—risk arrest, prosecution, and potential imprisonment.

The FCDO warns that even casual participation in what might seem like harmless betting could lead to serious consequences. The country’s gambling laws are among the most rigid in Southeast Asia, and enforcement efforts have increased amid rising concerns over underground operations targeting tourists.

Smoking, Vaping, and Alcohol Use Face Strong Restrictions

Thailand enforces strict smoking bans in many public spaces, including beaches, parks, and near government buildings. Violations may incur fines of up to 5,000 baht (around £110). This policy extends to vaping, which is entirely banned. Tourists found importing or using e-cigarettes may face confiscation, fines, or arrest.

Public consumption of alcohol is restricted during certain holidays and in sensitive cultural zones. The FCDO notes that while alcohol is not banned outright, inappropriate behavior or social media posts involving drinking—particularly those seen as disrespectful—could attract police attention or legal action.

Cultural Sensitivities: Dress Codes and Behavior

Thailand places high value on modesty and respect, especially at religious sites. Tourists should dress conservatively when visiting temples and royal grounds. Revealing clothing, especially for women, may be seen as disrespectful and can result in being denied entry or public reprimand.

Inappropriate public behavior, including displays of affection, loud arguments, or intoxication, can also be perceived as offensive and could trigger police involvement. The FCDO advises all UK travelers to be mindful of their surroundings and avoid actions that could be interpreted as culturally insensitive.

Penalties for Violations: Tourists Face Fines and Jail Time

Thailand’s legal system does not offer leniency for tourists who violate national laws. Violators may be subject to deportation, heavy financial penalties, or imprisonment. Recent cases include visitors jailed for flying drones without permission or fined for vaping in public.

The FCDO emphasized that British citizens are subject to Thai laws when in the country, and embassy assistance may be limited in criminal cases involving behavior deemed illegal or offensive by Thai authorities.

FCDO Travel Recommendations for UK Tourists in Thailand

To ensure a trouble-free and culturally respectful trip, the FCDO offers the following practical guidance:

  • Register Your Drone: If bringing a drone, complete registration with the NBTC within 30 days. Check flying zone restrictions before any operation.
  • Avoid All Gambling: Steer clear of casinos, card games, and informal betting—even in private settings.
  • Follow Smoking and Vaping Rules: Do not bring e-cigarettes. Respect designated smoking zones and comply with local signage.
  • Dress Modestly in Public: When visiting temples or rural areas, wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
  • Practice Cultural Respect: Be polite, avoid public displays of affection, and always remove shoes when entering temples.

Staying Informed Is the Key to Safe Travel

As Thailand welcomes millions of tourists in 2025, adherence to legal and cultural norms is more important than ever. UK visitors are encouraged to consult the latest FCDO travel advice before departure and regularly check local guidance while in Thailand.
