Kerala travelers will soon benefit from faster and more comfortable rail journeys as Indian Railways introduces Vande Bharat Sleeper trains on major interstate corridors. The new service will operate on routes linking Thiruvananthapuram with Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mangaluru. These trains combine reduced travel times with modern air-conditioned sleeper coaches, catering to growing demand for speed and comfort on long-distance segments.
This initiative reflects Indian Railways’ plan to modernize premium rail travel across the country. Kerala stands as a strong beneficiary due to its heavy passenger traffic and reliance on overnight train travel for business, tourism, healthcare, and education purposes.
Designed to Improve Comfort and Efficiency
The new Vande Bharat Sleeper trains offer a full air-conditioned layout with upgraded interiors and ergonomic berths. Each train includes 16 coaches with space for 823 passengers. The composition includes 11 three-tier AC coaches, four two-tier AC coaches, and one first-class AC coach. This tiered structure gives travelers several comfort levels based on preference and budget.
The trains will only offer confirmed tickets and will not issue RAC or waiting list allotments. Indian Railways also established a minimum travel distance of 400 kilometers for bookings. These measures aim to streamline occupancy and prioritize long journey travelers who benefit most from the premium sleeper format.
Passengers familiar with older express sleeper trains will notice major improvements. The Vande Bharat Sleeper offers quieter cabins, modern lighting, improved climate control, and upgraded sanitation systems. Faster Travel on High-Demand Corridors

On the Thiruvananthapuram–Chennai route, the new service shortens travel by three hours compared to current schedules. The 922-kilometer corridor currently takes around 16 hours and 30 minutes. On the Thiruvananthapuram–Bengaluru sector, travelers save three hours on the 844-kilometer journey. The new service also shortens travel on the Thiruvananthapuram–Mangaluru route by about three and a half hours.
Fares will reflect the upgraded positioning. The Mangaluru sector will carry a ₹500 premium over traditional express trains for AC sleepers. The Chennai sector will cost around ₹1,000 more, while Bengaluru fares will rise by approximately ₹800. Travelers often justify this premium for better comfort and shorter duration overnight travel.
Supporting Tourism and Interstate Mobility
Kerala remains one of India’s strongest inbound tourism markets. Travelers visit the state for culture, food, Ayurveda wellness, and backwater experiences.
