LOT Polish Airlines has taken a monumental step in its fleet renewal strategy by placing its first-ever order with Airbus, acquiring 40 A220-family aircraft. The firm order—announced during the prestigious 2025 Paris Air Show—includes 20 A220-100 and 20 A220-300 aircraft, with options to expand the total to 84 jets in the future.
This landmark agreement marks a new chapter in the legacy of Poland’s national carrier, which has traditionally operated a fleet dominated by Boeing aircraft. The transition to Airbus reflects LOT’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and market competitiveness in an evolving European aviation landscape.
Strategic Leap Toward European Leadership
“This decision is about securing LOT’s future,” said Michał Fijoł, Chief Executive Officer of LOT Polish Airlines. “The Airbus A220 family aircraft, entering our fleet from 2027, unlocks new opportunities for expansion. With their exceptional fuel efficiency, reduced noise, and passenger comfort, these aircraft will empower us to strengthen our foothold in Central and Eastern Europe and prepare for our central role at the upcoming Central Communication Port (CPK).”
The CPK is a planned mega transport hub near Warsaw, aimed at transforming Poland into a pivotal aviation gateway between Western Europe and Asia. LOT’s A220 fleet will be instrumental in supporting this ambitious infrastructure project, expected to become operational in the early 2030s.
A Milestone for Airbus and LOT
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Sales for Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft division, praised the partnership: “This is a historic moment as we officially welcome LOT Polish Airlines into the Airbus family. The A220’s advanced capabilities align perfectly with LOT’s modernisation goals, enabling efficient short- and medium-haul operations across the continent.”
This purchase positions LOT among over 30 airlines globally that have selected the A220 for its performance, sustainability credentials, and passenger experience.
Why the A220?
The Airbus A220 is the most modern aircraft in its size category. Built to carry between 100 and 160 passengers depending on the model and cabin configuration, the A220 is ideal for regional and intra-European routes. Its range of up to 3,600 nautical miles (approximately 6,700 kilometers) makes it a strong contender for both business and leisure travel markets.
Powered by Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines, the A220 boasts:
- 25% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft
- 50% smaller noise footprint, critical for urban airport operations
- Capability to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
- Target of 100% SAF compatibility by 2030
Such features make the A220 a cornerstone in Airbus’s and LOT’s shared vision for sustainable aviation growth.
Enhancing Passenger Experience
Beyond its technical capabilities, the A220 offers a superior travel experience. Passengers can expect:
- Wider seats and larger windows
- More spacious overhead bins
- Quieter cabin environment
- Advanced cabin air filtration and pressurization systems
This focus on comfort aligns with LOT’s premium offering, helping the airline compete more effectively with European low-cost carriers while still maintaining a reputation for quality service.
A Global Success for Airbus
As of May 2025, Airbus has received more than 900 firm orders for the A220 from over 30 customers worldwide. Over 415 aircraft have already been delivered and are actively serving on more than 1,600 routes to over 470 global destinations. Airlines operating the A220 include Air France, JetBlue, Air Canada, and Swiss International Air Lines, highlighting the aircraft’s wide market appeal.
Sustainability Aligned with EU Goals
LOT’s A220 order supports not only corporate goals but also broader European Union environmental directives. The European Green Deal and EU’s “Fit for 55” initiative aim to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Fuel-efficient and SAF-compatible aircraft like the A220 will be vital in reaching these milestones.
Poland, which ratified the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), is also boosting its airline sector’s transition toward carbon-neutral growth. LOT’s adoption of Airbus’s latest-generation aircraft demonstrates national alignment with global aviation sustainability commitments.
Looking Ahead
The integration of the A220 into LOT’s fleet marks a transformative moment not only for the airline but also for Poland’s role in European aviation. With deliveries set to begin in 2027, LOT is positioning itself as a forward-looking carrier, ready to meet the demands of modern travelers and environmental stewards alike.
This decision places LOT in a stronger position to enhance its route network, increase frequency on high-demand destinations, and serve emerging travel corridors between Poland and the rest of Europe.
As the world looks to greener skies, LOT Polish Airlines’ investment in the Airbus A220 signals a bold commitment to efficiency, expansion, and sustainability in the skies over Europe and beyond.
