Paris is preparing to transform transfers between Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est with a new underground pedestrian passage scheduled to open in March 2027.
The 56-metre tunnel will create a direct walking link beneath Rue La Fayette, making it easier for passengers to move between two of the French capital’s busiest railway hubs. The project is expected to improve accessibility, shorten transfer times and reduce the need for travelers to navigate surface streets with luggage.
Although the two stations are only around 500 metres apart, changing between them has traditionally required passengers to walk outdoors through a busy urban area. The new link will provide a clearer and more comfortable route for commuters, tourists and international rail passengers.
The underground connection forms part of the wider Gare du Nord-Magenta-Gare de l’Est transport hub, which handles approximately 800,000 travelers each day and around 200,000 daily connections.
Tunnel Breakthrough Marks a Major Construction Milestone
The completion of the tunnel breakthrough represents an important step toward the planned 2027 opening.
Unlike a new train tunnel, the passage is being designed for pedestrians. It will connect Gare de l’Est with the underground Magenta station area near Gare du Nord, improving movement across a major interchange serving regional, national and international rail networks.
Construction began with improvements to Rue d’Alsace, including an elevator and two escalators to enhance accessibility. Work then advanced beneath Rue La Fayette using a traditional engineering method suited to the dense urban environment.
The project has required careful excavation near existing buildings and infrastructure. On the Gare de l’Est side, teams have worked on a large opening through a thick load-bearing wall. On the Gare du Nord side, the passage must connect through reinforced concrete infrastructure built during the development of the Magenta station complex.
Easier Transfers for Tourists and International Travelers
The new Gare du Nord-Gare de l’Est tunnel will be particularly valuable for visitors arriving in Paris by rail.
Gare du Nord serves major domestic and international connections, including Eurostar services linking Paris with London and trains connecting the French capital with northern France and neighboring countries. It is also a major hub for suburban and regional rail services.
Gare de l’Est provides connections toward eastern France and international destinations including Germany and Luxembourg. It will also become increasingly important with the planned launch of the CDG Express airport rail service.
By simplifying the transfer between these stations, Paris can offer travelers a smoother route between international trains, regional services and airport connections.
The improvement may be especially helpful for visitors carrying baggage, families traveling with children and passengers with reduced mobility. A more intuitive underground route can reduce uncertainty and help travelers avoid street crossings during busy periods or poor weather.
CDG Express Adds a New Airport Connection
The tunnel is scheduled to open alongside the CDG Express, the future direct rail connection between Gare de l’Est and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.
The airport service is designed to connect central Paris with the airport in less than 20 minutes. Its arrival will increase Gare de l’Est’s importance as a gateway for international visitors, aviation passengers and business travelers.
Passengers arriving at Gare du Nord will be able to use the new underground passage to reach Gare de l’Est more easily before continuing toward the airport. This could make rail-to-air transfers more convenient and reduce reliance on taxis, buses and road transport in central Paris.
Accessibility Improvements Support a Better Visitor Experience
The project is not limited to the tunnel itself.
A new passenger access point is being developed at 50 Rue d’Alsace through the Cour des Messageries. The modern entrance hall will support improved circulation while making the wider station area easier to navigate.
The connection also complements surface-level improvements designed to provide a clearer and safer route between the stations.
For Paris tourism, the project offers practical benefits. More efficient transfers can improve first impressions of the city, reduce stress for arriving visitors and help travelers connect more easily with hotels, attractions and onward destinations.
Paris Strengthens Its Role as a Rail Tourism Hub
The new underground passage reflects Paris’s continuing focus on integrated public transport and sustainable urban mobility.
By linking major stations more effectively, the city is creating a smoother experience for both residents and visitors while strengthening rail as an alternative to short road journeys.
When the Gare du Nord-Gare de l’Est tunnel opens in March 2027, travelers will gain a faster, safer and more accessible route through one of Europe’s most important railway districts.
