China Launches Panda Express Jinxiu Tianfu Luxury Train With 16-Day Silk Road Journey From Chengdu to Xinjiang

China has introduced a new luxury rail experience linking Chengdu with Xinjiang as the Panda Express Jinxiu Tianfu train begins passenger operations on a 16-day journey through northern and southern Xinjiang. The themed service departed from Chengdu on 19 May 2026 with 92 passengers, creating a premium rail option for travellers seeking scenic landscapes, cultural immersion and a slower way to explore western China.

The train was developed by China Railway Chengdu Group and Sichuan Tourism Investment Group. Its design is inspired by Sichuan brocade and Song Dynasty aesthetics, with panda elements woven into the interiors. The concept turns the train into a moving cultural space while giving guests access to remote destinations without the complexity of arranging multiple transfers.

Eighteen Cars and 46 Private Rooms Define the Experience

The Panda Express Jinxiu Tianfu train consists of 18 cars and 46 private guest rooms. Twelve cars are dedicated to accommodation, while additional spaces include a multifunctional welcome car, a dining car and an entertainment and observation car. The train also carries a kitchen car, a staff accommodation car and a power car.

The private rooms are designed for travellers who want more comfort during long-distance rail journeys. The format gives passengers time to rest between excursions while maintaining a consistent onboard experience throughout the route.

Dining and lounge spaces add to the sense of occasion. Travellers can enjoy meals, social time and scenic views while moving through landscapes that range from grasslands and alpine lakes to Silk Road heritage areas.

Sixteen-Day Journey Connects Major Xinjiang Destinations

The inaugural itinerary begins in Chengdu and travels through key destinations across Xinjiang. Stops include Urumqi, Kanas, Sayram Lake, Kashgar and Turpan, giving passengers access to a varied mix of natural scenery, historic sites and regional culture.

The route is designed as a panoramic journey through northern and southern Xinjiang. Travellers can experience lakes, wetlands, old towns, desert landscapes and Silk Road heritage while returning to the same train between excursions.

This structure can be especially attractive to international visitors who want to explore a large region without repeatedly changing hotels or managing long road transfers. It also makes the journey suitable for older travellers and groups looking for a more relaxed pace.

Cultural Programming Adds Depth to the Rail Journey

The train experience extends beyond sightseeing. Cultural activities include traditional craft experiences, Tajik family visits and Silk Road music events. These elements give passengers opportunities to engage with regional heritage rather than simply observe landscapes from the window.

The Song Dynasty-inspired theme also helps position the journey as a showcase for Sichuan culture. The interiors combine brocade motifs, panda imagery and refined design details, connecting the departure region with the wider Silk Road itinerary.

Overseas Demand Signals Strong Interest in Luxury Rail Tourism

The inaugural journey sold all 92 seats, while advance sales for the planned annual departures reached 75% before the first service began. Overseas travellers accounted for around 80% of bookings, including visitors from Singapore and Malaysia.

That demand highlights the growing appeal of rail-based tourism among travellers seeking immersive, multi-day experiences. Luxury trains can attract visitors who want comfort, storytelling and destination access combined in one itinerary.

The interest also creates opportunities for hotels, restaurants, guides and attractions connected to the route. Before departure, visitors can spend time in Chengdu, while stops across Xinjiang can support local tourism businesses and cultural experiences.

A New Flagship for China Rail Tourism

The Panda Express brand has operated tourism trains since 2021, serving destinations across China. The Jinxiu Tianfu addition raises the profile of the product with a more premium format and a stronger focus on design, private accommodation and cultural immersion.
