Morocco Rail, Airport and Highway Upgrades Boost Tourism Connectivity With African Development Bank Support

Morocco is advancing a major transport modernisation drive with support from the African Development Bank Group, improving the way visitors move between cities, airports, ports and regional destinations. The programme spans rail capacity, motorway access, logistics links and airport expansion, creating a stronger foundation for tourism growth across the Kingdom.

For travellers, the impact is increasingly practical. Faster rail services, improved road access and expanding airport infrastructure can make it easier to combine coastal destinations, cultural cities and regional attractions within one itinerary. The upgrades also support hotels, restaurants, tour operators and local businesses that depend on reliable visitor flows and efficient supply chains.

Rail Investment Connects Major Tourism Cities

A central part of the programme is the modernisation of Morocco’s rail network. The African Development Bank has provided approximately €300 million to support expansion along the Tangier-Marrakech corridor, including capacity improvements, new lines and advanced signalling systems.

The investment strengthens a route that links several of Morocco’s most important tourism and business destinations. Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech each attract visitors for different reasons, from medinas and coastal experiences to business travel, hospitality and cultural tourism.

Morocco’s Al Boraq high-speed service already connects Tangier and Casablanca through Kenitra and Rabat Agdal. The journey between Tangier and Casablanca takes around two hours and ten minutes, making multi-city travel more practical for both international visitors and domestic passengers.

For tourists, this can turn a longer itinerary into a more flexible experience. A traveller arriving in Casablanca can add Tangier or Rabat without relying entirely on road transfers, while visitors continuing south can connect onward toward Marrakech.

Guercif-Nador Highway Improves Eastern Access

Road infrastructure is also receiving major support. The Guercif-Nador highway project has mobilised €246 million in financing, including €200 million from the African Development Bank and €46 million from the Africa Growing Together Fund.

The highway is designed to connect the Nador West Med port complex with Morocco’s motorway network while improving mobility across the Oriental region. It is also intended to strengthen road safety and reduce transport costs for communities and businesses along the corridor.

For tourism, improved road access can help open eastern Morocco to a wider range of visitors. Destinations such as Oujda-Saïdia and nearby coastal areas can benefit from smoother journeys, while hotels, restaurants and local attractions may gain from increased regional movement.

Airport Modernisation Expands Visitor Capacity

Morocco is also moving ahead with airport infrastructure improvements. A modernisation programme covers major airports serving Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier and Fez, with planned terminal expansion and upgrades designed to improve passenger handling.

These airports are important gateways for international tourism. Marrakech attracts cultural and leisure travellers, Agadir serves coastal holidays, Tangier supports northern travel, and Fez remains a key destination for heritage tourism.

As airport capacity grows, visitors can expect a more efficient arrival experience and stronger links between air gateways and the rest of the national transport network. Better connections can also encourage travellers to explore beyond a single city.

Logistics Infrastructure Supports Tourism Businesses

The wider transport strategy is not only about passenger movement. The Nador West Med port and connected road projects are designed to improve logistics competitiveness and regional access.

That matters for tourism because hospitality businesses rely on dependable deliveries. Hotels, restaurants, resorts and event venues need efficient transport networks for food, equipment, maintenance supplies and other services.

Improved logistics can support service quality while helping tourism businesses operate more reliably during peak seasons.

Easier Multi-Destination Travel Across Morocco

Morocco’s tourism offering spans medinas, beaches, mountains, desert experiences and cultural heritage. Better transport links make it easier for travellers to build varied itineraries around destinations such as Tangier, Casablanca, Marrakech, Fez, Chefchaouen and coastal resort areas.

A visitor can combine rail travel between major cities with road journeys to regional attractions, creating more opportunities for longer stays and wider tourism spending. This benefits accommodation providers, transport operators, guides and local communities.

Morocco Builds a Stronger Tourism Network

The African Development Bank-backed investments are helping Morocco create a more connected and competitive transport system. Rail expansion, road upgrades, port access and airport modernisation are improving mobility while supporting trade, tourism and regional development.

For travellers, the long-term benefit is a more seamless journey across the Kingdom. For Morocco’s tourism sector, the upgrades strengthen access to cities and regions with the potential to attract more visitors, support local economies and deliver a more convenient travel experience.
