GOL Linhas Aéreas is expanding tourism connectivity between Brazil and the United States with a new seasonal nonstop service linking Rio de Janeiro and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The route provides travellers with a direct connection between two major global tourism cities while strengthening access to Brazil’s beaches, cultural attractions, major events and nature-based experiences. It also supports Rio de Janeiro’s position as an important gateway for visitors continuing to destinations across Brazil.
The new service operates between Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport and New York JFK. Flights began on July 8, 2026, and are scheduled to continue through October 2026, covering the busy Northern Hemisphere summer travel period.
The connection is expected to benefit leisure passengers, business travellers and people visiting family and friends. By removing the need for an intermediate stop, the route can make journeys between New York and Rio de Janeiro faster and more convenient.
Seasonal Schedule Expands Travel Options
Flights from New York JFK to Rio de Janeiro are scheduled for Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Return services from Rio de Janeiro operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
The three-times-weekly schedule gives travellers several options for planning short holidays, extended stays and multi-destination journeys across Brazil.
The approximately ten-hour nonstop flight also improves access for passengers travelling from the wider New York metropolitan region. Travellers from other parts of the United States may connect through New York before continuing directly to Brazil.
For Brazilian visitors, the service creates a convenient route to one of the world’s most prominent tourism, entertainment and commercial centres. New York offers museums, theatre, shopping, restaurants, landmark attractions and major international events.
Meanwhile, American travellers gain easier access to Rio de Janeiro’s coastal scenery, cultural districts and internationally recognised visitor experiences.
Rio de Janeiro Remains a Global Tourism Gateway
Rio de Janeiro is central to Brazil’s international tourism appeal. The city is famous for Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain and its dramatic setting between the Atlantic coastline and forest-covered hills.
Beyond its best-known landmarks, Rio offers museums, music, gastronomy, nightlife, sporting attractions and community-based cultural experiences. Its year-round warm climate also supports beach tourism and outdoor activities.
Carnival remains one of the destination’s strongest international attractions. The celebration draws visitors seeking samba parades, street festivities, live performances and Brazilian cultural traditions.
Although the seasonal flight operates outside the main Carnival period, improved connectivity can encourage early travel planning and strengthen Rio’s visibility among American tourists considering future visits.
The city recorded a reported 17 percent increase in international tourist arrivals between 2025 and 2026, demonstrating growing interest in one of South America’s most recognisable destinations.
United States Drives International Visitor Demand
The United States remains an important source market for Brazil’s tourism economy.
More than 137,699 travellers from the United States visited Brazil during the first two months of 2026, placing the country among Brazil’s leading international visitor markets during that period.
Direct air services can support further growth by making Brazil easier to reach and encouraging travellers to consider longer or more varied itineraries.
Visitors from the United States are attracted by Brazil’s beaches, food, music, heritage, festivals and natural landscapes. The country also offers significant potential for adventure tourism, ecotourism and wildlife experiences.
Improved connections may therefore benefit hotels, restaurants, tour operators, transport companies and visitor attractions in Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian destinations.
Domestic Network Opens Wider Brazil Adventures
International passengers arriving in Rio can use GOL’s domestic network to continue to destinations across the country.
These connections can provide access to historic cities, tropical coastlines, regional cultural centres and gateways serving the Amazon rainforest. Travellers may also combine Rio with nature-focused destinations offering waterfalls, wildlife encounters, hiking and marine activities.
This wider connectivity allows the New York route to support tourism beyond Rio de Janeiro. International visitors who extend their journeys can distribute spending across several destinations, strengthening regional economies and supporting tourism employment.
Longer itineraries may also increase demand for domestic flights, accommodation, guided excursions and local transportation.
GOL Expands International Operations
The Rio de Janeiro–New York service forms part of GOL’s broader international expansion and its strategy to strengthen operations from Galeão International Airport.
The airline has been developing additional connections between Brazil and overseas markets, including services linking Rio de Janeiro with destinations in the United States.
GOL’s partnership with American Airlines may also provide passengers with broader connecting opportunities and coordinated travel options from cities across the United States.
As Brazil continues to attract visitors through its cultural diversity, natural beauty and major international events, direct aviation links will remain essential to tourism growth.
The new GOL route connects two internationally recognised cities while creating easier access to Brazilian beaches, urban attractions and nationwide adventures. It also reinforces Rio de Janeiro’s role as one of South America’s leading tourism gateways.
