Etihad Rail Launches Pet-Friendly Travel as Abu Dhabi–Fujairah Trains Begin and Dubai Connection Nears

Etihad Rail has introduced pet-friendly travel rules for passengers using the United Arab Emirates’ new national railway service.

Domestic pets can travel onboard when passengers place them inside approved carriers and follow the operator’s safety and baggage requirements.

The policy gives pet owners a new alternative to private vehicles when travelling between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. Etihad Rail launched introductory passenger operations between the two destinations on June 30, 2026.

Dubai and Al Dhaid stations will join the passenger network on September 30, 2026. Their opening will expand travel options across major urban, residential and tourism centres.

The new pet policy combines flexibility with strict controls designed to protect animals, owners and other passengers.

It also demonstrates how Etihad Rail is developing a passenger-focused service as railway connectivity expands across the Emirates.

Domestic Pets Must Remain Inside Approved Carriers

Etihad Rail permits domestic animals, including dogs and falcons, onboard its passenger trains.

However, every pet must remain inside an approved carrier throughout the entire journey.

Animals cannot move freely through coaches, sit on passenger seats or travel outside their carriers. Owners must maintain control of their pets and follow instructions from railway employees.

The carrier must not exceed 55 centimetres in length, 40 centimetres in width and 23 centimetres in height.

Passengers should confirm these measurements before reaching the station. Oversized carriers may not receive approval for travel.

The carrier must also provide secure and suitable accommodation for the animal without creating discomfort or disruption for nearby travellers.

Pet Carrier Replaces Standard Cabin Bag

Each passenger can bring only one approved pet carrier onboard.

Etihad Rail treats that carrier as the passenger’s standard cabin baggage allowance. Therefore, travellers carrying a pet cannot also bring a separate regular cabin bag.

This restriction helps the operator manage luggage space and keep aisles clear inside passenger coaches.

Pet owners must pack carefully and place essential personal items inside the permitted carrier arrangement or other approved baggage allowance.

Passengers should prepare food, water and any required pet supplies before departure. However, animals must remain secured during the journey.

Planning becomes especially important for visitors combining rail travel with hotel stays, domestic holidays or longer journeys across the UAE.

Assistance Dogs Require Advance Arrangements

Certified assistance dogs can also travel on Etihad Rail services.

Passengers must contact the railway operator before departure to make the necessary arrangements.

Advance coordination allows staff to understand the traveller’s accessibility requirements and prepare suitable support at stations and onboard.

The provision strengthens Etihad Rail’s commitment to inclusive mobility as passenger operations expand.

Accessible transport features can help residents and visitors travel more independently between Emirates.

Passengers requiring additional assistance should provide their journey details early and follow the booking instructions issued by Etihad Rail.

Abu Dhabi–Fujairah Service Opens New Tourism Link

The first passenger service connects Abu Dhabi with Fujairah in approximately one hour and 45 minutes.

This route creates a direct rail link between the UAE’s western urban centre and its eastern coastline.

For tourists, the service improves access between Abu Dhabi’s museums, cultural attractions and hospitality districts and Fujairah’s beaches, mountains and heritage sites.

Pet-friendly travel may encourage residents to plan domestic holidays without leaving their animals behind or arranging separate road transport.

Fujairah’s resorts and outdoor attractions could gain stronger access to visitors travelling from Abu Dhabi.

Hotels that accept pets may also benefit as railway journeys become easier for animal owners.

Dubai Joins Passenger Network in September

Dubai Train Station and Al Dhaid Train Station are scheduled to open on September 30, 2026.

Their launch will mark the official expansion of Etihad Rail’s passenger operations beyond the introductory Abu Dhabi–Fujairah phase.

Dubai’s inclusion will connect the railway with one of the world’s leading tourism and aviation hubs.

Passengers will gain another option for travelling between Dubai, Abu Dhabi and destinations towards the east coast as services develop.

Sharjah Station is scheduled to open on March 30, 2027, while stations serving Al Dhafra will begin operations earlier, on December 30, 2026.

The phased rollout will allow Etihad Rail to introduce services gradually while testing operations and passenger demand.

National Rail Network Expands Travel Choices

Etihad Rail’s passenger fleet includes 13 trains, with each train carrying up to 400 passengers.

Services can operate at speeds reaching 200 kilometres per hour.

The wider network is designed to connect 11 cities and regions, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Al Dhaid, Fujairah, Al Mirfa and Al Ruwais.

This expansion could reduce dependence on private vehicles while creating more predictable journeys between Emirates.

Rail travel may also support domestic tourism by making coastal, cultural and urban destinations easier to combine within one itinerary.

Passengers can work, relax or enjoy the journey without managing long road drives.

Pet-Friendly Rules Support Modern Passenger Needs

The new animal policy adds an important lifestyle feature to the UAE’s emerging railway system.

It recognises that pets form part of many households while maintaining clear standards for safety and passenger comfort.

The carrier limits and baggage rules may require preparation, but they create a controlled system that allows animals to travel legally and securely.

As Etihad Rail reaches Dubai, Al Dhaid, Al Dhafra and Sharjah, pet owners will gain more opportunities to explore the country by train.

The combination of modern infrastructure, faster intercity connections and passenger-focused facilities signals a new era for UAE domestic travel.
