Yatra has marked 20 years in India’s travel industry with a commemorative film tracing the country’s shift from ticket-counter reservations to mobile bookings, digital payments and artificial intelligence.
The anniversary campaign reflects how technology has transformed the way Indian travellers search, compare, book and manage journeys. It also outlines Yatra’s priorities as the company enters its third decade, with corporate mobility, hotel distribution, expense management and AI-led services becoming increasingly important.
Founded in 2006, Yatra entered the market when online travel purchasing remained unfamiliar to many Indian customers. Internet access was limited, confidence in digital payments was still developing and smartphones had not yet become central to everyday life.
Today, travellers expect real-time information, broad accommodation choices, flexible payments and connected services covering every stage of a trip.
Early services widened digital access
Yatra’s early innovations responded to the practical barriers facing India’s emerging online travel market.
The company introduced SMS booking services in 2007, allowing customers to access digital travel products without relying on advanced mobile applications. It later introduced cash-on-delivery in 2010, helping travellers who remained hesitant about online payments.
The Yatra Mini application arrived in 2016. Designed for low-bandwidth environments, it allowed users in areas with slower internet connections to search for and reserve travel services more easily.
These developments reflected different stages of India’s digital growth. They also demonstrated that expanding online tourism required more than creating booking websites.
Travel platforms needed to address payment confidence, connectivity limitations and the accessibility needs of customers across cities and regional markets.
Yatra has since expanded beyond flights to offer hotels, homestays, trains, buses, taxis, holiday packages, cruises and corporate travel services.
Corporate travel becomes a growth engine
Managed business travel now represents a major part of Yatra’s commercial strategy.
Companies require platforms that can enforce travel policies, control expenditure, approve bookings and support employees throughout their journeys. They also need systems that connect reservations with finance, reporting and reimbursement processes.
Yatra strengthened this segment through its acquisition of Globe Travels in September 2024 for ₹1.28 billion.
The transaction added approximately 360 corporate customers and annual gross bookings of nearly US$90 million. It also created opportunities to introduce Yatra’s digital booking platform, hotel inventory and expense-management services to a broader business network.
Yatra now serves more than 1,300 large corporate customers alongside approximately 59,000 registered small and medium-sized enterprises.
During the financial year ended March 2026, the company continued adding corporate contracts. These accounts increased its potential annual billing and reinforced its position in India’s managed business travel market.
RECAP brings AI into expense management
Yatra’s RECAP platform demonstrates how travel companies are moving beyond isolated ticket transactions.
The expense-management system connects travel arrangements with the administrative work required after a journey. Employees can record expenses, submit claims and monitor reimbursements, while managers can review spending and apply company policies.
RECAP uses generative AI and large language models to analyse receipts. The technology is designed to interpret information more contextually than conventional optical character recognition.
The platform also includes a chatbot supported by generative AI and retrieval-augmented generation. Users can ask questions, navigate the system and analyse expense information through simple text commands.
Mobile access allows employees and managers to submit expenses, approve reports, track mileage and inspect financial information while travelling.
Other features include multiple approval levels, auditing tools, split-expense capabilities and analytical dashboards. Integration with business systems can also help move approved information into wider accounting and administrative processes.
For corporate travellers, this approach can reduce repetitive paperwork and create a more connected journey from booking to reimbursement.
Hotel network expands destination choice
Accommodation remains another important part of Yatra’s growth strategy.
The company reports approximately 80,000 contracted hotels and homestays across nearly 1,500 Indian cities and towns. Its international inventory extends to more than 2.5 million properties.
This distribution network gives travellers access to accommodation beyond major metropolitan centres and established tourism hubs.
It can also provide independent hotels and homestays with greater digital visibility, helping smaller businesses reach customers from distant domestic and international markets.
During FY2025–26, stand-alone hotel room nights increased by 16.4% to approximately 1.94 million. The adjusted margin from hotels and packages rose by 19.6% to around ₹1.76 billion.
The growth highlights the increasing importance of accommodation and package services as Yatra works to expand higher-margin areas of its business.
Annual growth meets profitability pressure
Yatra reported revenue of approximately ₹10.07 billion for FY2025–26, an increase of 26.6%.
Gross bookings rose by 13.6% to approximately ₹80.54 billion, while adjusted EBITDA advanced by 64.2% to nearly ₹563.8 million.
Air passenger bookings reached around 5.39 million, representing growth of 2.4%. However, the company ended the year with a net loss of approximately ₹66 million.
The results underline the pressures facing travel technology businesses. Aviation disruption, geopolitical instability and changing product margins can affect performance even when annual bookings increase.
Technology shapes Yatra’s third decade
Yatra enters its next chapter focused on corporate travel, hotels, AI and operational efficiency.
Its anniversary represents more than a corporate milestone. It reflects India’s transformation from counter-based reservations to connected digital travel services within two decades.
Yatra’s next challenge will be turning its corporate scale, accommodation network and intelligent technology into smoother journeys, stronger customer loyalty and sustainable financial growth.
