Air India has ended its introductory complimentary inflight internet offer and introduced paid Wi-Fi plans across selected domestic and international flights.
Passengers using Wi-Fi-enabled services can now choose between messaging, basic browsing and streaming packages. Prices start at ₹299 for one hour of browsing, while full-flight access varies according to the selected service level.
The change marks a new phase in Air India’s digital passenger strategy. The airline initially offered complimentary connectivity while introducing Wi-Fi across selected aircraft and familiarising travellers with the onboard service.
Connectivity is currently available on Airbus A350-900 aircraft, selected Boeing 777-300 aircraft, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and Airbus A321neo aircraft operating on eligible routes.
However, availability can vary because of aircraft assignments, regulatory restrictions, satellite coverage and technical conditions. Passengers should therefore check their flight status before departure.
New Air India Wi-Fi plans start at ₹299
Air India has structured its paid internet service around different passenger needs.
The Chat and Text plan costs ₹399 for the full flight. It provides access to messaging applications and is designed for passengers who mainly want to remain in contact with family, friends or colleagues.
The Basic Browsing plan supports email, websites, social media and cloud-based services. It costs ₹299 for one hour, ₹699 for three hours or ₹1,199 for the full flight.
Passengers requiring higher bandwidth can purchase the full-flight Streaming plan for ₹2,699. This package offers unrestricted access to supported streaming services and online entertainment.
Plans can be purchased onboard after the aircraft reaches the required altitude. Travellers must connect their device to the Air India Wi-Fi network and authenticate themselves through the inflight portal using their travel details.
Air India accepts UPI and eligible international credit or debit cards for onboard purchases.
Premium passengers retain complimentary benefits
Although the general complimentary introductory period has ended, some passengers continue to receive included connectivity benefits.
First Class customers receive complimentary full-flight streaming access. Business Class passengers receive one hour of browsing and full-flight chat access without an additional charge.
Maharaja Club members can also receive benefits based on their membership tier, provided their loyalty number is linked to the booking before travel.
Red and Silver members receive one hour of complimentary chat access. Gold members receive one hour of browsing alongside unrestricted chat access.
Platinum members receive unrestricted browsing, chat and streaming connectivity.
These benefits allow Air India to introduce paid plans while maintaining additional value for premium customers and frequent flyers.
Passengers should check aircraft before departure
Wi-Fi is not yet available on every aircraft across Air India’s network.
Travellers who require internet access should check whether the “Wi-Fi Onboard” icon appears during booking, flight-status checks or web check-in.
Even when Wi-Fi is listed, the operating aircraft may change at short notice. Technical issues, government restrictions, satellite availability or operational requirements can also affect connectivity.
Passengers should download important documents, presentations, entertainment and travel information before departure as a precaution.
This preparation is particularly important for business travellers planning to work during long-haul journeys or connect with colleagues across different time zones.
Inflight internet performance can also vary depending on the number of users, available bandwidth and the aircraft’s location.
Connectivity becomes part of airline competition
Reliable internet access is becoming an increasingly important part of the international passenger experience.
Business travellers use onboard Wi-Fi for email, cloud platforms and workplace communication. Leisure passengers frequently use connectivity for messaging, social media, travel planning and entertainment.
As demand grows, airlines must balance customer expectations with the cost of installing and maintaining satellite equipment.
Paid packages allow carriers to recover part of that investment while offering different levels of access. They can also help manage limited onboard bandwidth by separating messaging, browsing and streaming services.
For Air India, the new structure supports its wider effort to modernise cabin products and digital services.
The airline became the first Indian carrier to introduce inflight Wi-Fi on domestic services when it launched complimentary connectivity in January 2025.
Digital services influence passenger choices
Wi-Fi availability may increasingly influence how travellers compare airlines, especially on lengthy international flights.
Passengers may consider internet pricing alongside baggage allowances, seat comfort, inflight entertainment and meal services when selecting a carrier.
The change also introduces an additional travel expense for Economy and Premium Economy passengers who require unrestricted access.
However, the range of plans gives travellers the flexibility to select a lower-cost messaging package or a more comprehensive browsing and streaming option.
As Air India expands and renews its fleet, Wi-Fi-enabled aircraft could become more common across its network.
The move from free introductory access to paid connectivity reflects the growing commercial importance of digital services in aviation.
For passengers, staying connected at cruising altitude remains available, but the level of access will now depend on aircraft availability, cabin benefits, loyalty status and the package purchased onboard.
