Thailand is adding a fresh dimension to its global tourism offering by taking Thailand Surf Therapy to international audiences. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is promoting a new surf and wellness tourism experience that combines surfing, nature, physical movement, mindfulness and positive social connection, with the aim of strengthening Thailand’s position as a leading wellness tourism destination.
The initiative comes as travellers increasingly look for holidays that offer more than sightseeing and relaxation. Through its Healing Is the New Luxury direction, TAT is positioning Thailand Surf Therapy as a structured, science-based wellness experience that uses the country’s coastline and marine environment to encourage emotional wellbeing, resilience and meaningful connections. The programme is being developed around Phuket and Phang-nga, two destinations already known for beaches, surfing and coastal experiences.
TAT Takes Thailand Surf Therapy to International Markets
TAT recently brought international media, key opinion leaders and content creators to Phuket and Phang-nga as part of the Amazing Thailand Surf & Wellness Journey. The programme gave participants an opportunity to experience the concept directly while learning how surfing and coastal activities can be integrated into Thailand’s wider wellness tourism offering.
Rather than presenting surfing simply as a recreational activity, the initiative focuses on how time in nature, physical movement, breathing practices and social interaction can contribute to a broader sense of wellbeing.
TAT’s approach is also intended to create a more distinctive travel proposition for international visitors who are seeking experiences centred on health, balance and personal renewal.
Phang-nga Emerges as a Coastal Wellness Destination
Phang-nga is at the centre of Thailand’s developing surf therapy concept. The province provides a natural setting where beaches, ocean activities and wellness experiences can be combined within a single destination.
The programme builds on a June 2026 Thailand Surf Therapy Real Experience and Trust Building Journey, organised by TAT in Phang-nga. Held on June 18–19, the initiative brought together tourism professionals, wellness operators, surf businesses, destination management companies and international partners to experience the concept and provide feedback on its development.
The project draws on international knowledge shared by Waves for Change, a South Africa-based organisation with experience developing Surf Therapy programmes. Its expertise is being adapted to Thailand’s tourism environment and cultural context rather than simply replicated as an overseas model.
Surfing Becomes Part of Thailand’s Wellness Strategy
At the heart of Thailand Surf Therapy is the idea that the ocean can become more than a backdrop for a holiday. Surfing, movement, nature and human interaction are brought together as components of a structured experience designed to support emotional wellbeing.
TAT describes the initiative as a science-based wellness experience, rather than a medical treatment. This distinction is important as Thailand develops new wellness tourism products aimed at travellers who want meaningful experiences while travelling.
The concept also reflects a broader shift in international tourism. Wellness travellers are increasingly interested in experiences that encourage reconnection with themselves, other people and the natural environment. Thailand is seeking to use its marine resources, hospitality expertise and established tourism infrastructure to respond to that demand.
International Expertise Supports Thailand Surf Therapy
Waves for Change has been an important partner in developing the initiative. The organisation’s Surf Therapy approach focuses on creating supportive environments where participants can build confidence, strengthen resilience, develop emotional regulation skills and establish positive relationships through interaction with the ocean.
Thai partners are also contributing to the model. Prince of Songkla University Phuket Campus, La Vita Sana, Memories Surf House and Span Global have joined under the Rise On Wave network to support the development of Surf Therapy knowledge and experiences in Thailand.
Their involvement is intended to help create a model that is relevant to Thailand’s coastal destinations and capable of becoming part of the country’s broader wellness tourism ecosystem.
Three Surf Therapy Experiences Under Development
The Thailand Surf Therapy concept includes several experience formats designed for different lengths of stay. These include the Wave Reset Program, planned for three to five days; the Ocean Balance Program, designed for seven to 14 days; and the Surf & Soul Program, intended for stays of 14 days or longer.
Each format is being developed around surfing, nature, breathing, personal development and positive relationships. The programme structure could eventually give international travellers the flexibility to choose an experience based on the amount of time they have available.
The approach also creates opportunities for local tourism businesses, surf operators and wellness providers to develop new products around Thailand’s coastal resources.
Thailand Strengthens Its Global Wellness Tourism Position
Thailand Surf Therapy forms part of the country’s wider effort to develop high-quality health and wellness tourism. The initiative was presented as part of Thailand Health Excellence 2026, which aims to strengthen Thailand’s position as a global health and healing destination.
For TAT, surf therapy adds another layer to Thailand’s established wellness offering. The country can combine beaches and marine activities with wellness resorts, hospitality, traditional practices and increasingly structured health-focused experiences.
Thailand Surf Therapy Creates a New Travel Experience
With international travellers increasingly searching for holidays that feel restorative and purposeful, Thailand is giving its beaches a new role in the tourism story. Thailand Surf Therapy brings together the country’s coastline, surfing culture, wellness expertise and hospitality in a way that moves beyond the traditional beach holiday.
As TAT continues presenting the concept to global audiences, Phuket and Phang-nga could become important destinations for travellers interested in surf wellness, coastal wellbeing and science-based wellness tourism. The initiative is still developing, but its direction is clear: Thailand wants the ocean to be part of a deeper travel experience where visitors can slow down, reconnect with nature and return home with more than photographs and souvenirs.
