Tripura has launched app-based cab services and a metaverse-enabled Tourism Information Centre at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala. The digital upgrade aims to improve last-mile connectivity while helping visitors discover the state’s tourism attractions immediately after arrival.
Tripura Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury inaugurated the Uber cab service at MBB Airport. The platform was also launched virtually at Jogendranagar railway station, extending app-based mobility across two important passenger gateways.
At the same time, the minister opened a modern Tourism Information Centre featuring a TIC Metaverse service. The immersive facility allows travellers to preview destinations digitally, understand available experiences and plan their journeys across Tripura.
Together, the initiatives connect physical transport with digital destination discovery. They also address two important concerns for visitors: finding dependable onward travel and accessing useful tourism information.
The services represent a significant change for MBB Airport, where travellers previously depended mainly on conventional prepaid taxis and auto-rickshaws. These existing options remain available alongside the newly introduced app-based service.
Airport journeys become easier
Last-mile transport often shapes a visitor’s first impression of a destination. Unclear fares, limited vehicle availability and unfamiliar booking processes can create difficulties after a flight, particularly for first-time tourists.
The app-based model gives passengers another way to arrange airport transfers. Travellers can request a vehicle through a mobile application, view relevant booking details and follow the journey digitally.
This approach may reduce the need for fare negotiations and unplanned transport arrangements outside the terminal. It also provides greater flexibility for passengers arriving with luggage, travelling in families or continuing toward hotels and attractions.
Visitors can still choose regulated prepaid auto-rickshaws according to their budget and requirements. Maintaining both systems gives travellers greater choice while allowing traditional operators to remain part of the airport transport network.
The launch follows earlier efforts to improve ground transport standards at MBB Airport. Authorities had previously introduced measures such as standardised uniforms for prepaid drivers, but digital booking adds another level of convenience and transparency.
Railway connectivity expands options
The virtual rollout at Jogendranagar railway station extends the initiative beyond aviation. This is important for travellers combining flights and trains during journeys through Agartala and neighbouring areas.
Better coordination between airports, railway stations and local road transport can support smoother multi-modal travel. Passengers arriving by train can arrange onward journeys more easily, while air travellers gain another option for reaching railway connections.
For Tripura’s tourism sector, improved connections can help distribute visitors beyond Agartala. Reliable ground mobility is especially important for travellers continuing toward cultural attractions, nature destinations and more distant districts.
The service does not introduce new trains, flights or airport routes. However, it can make existing transport infrastructure easier to use by improving connections at the beginning and end of each journey.
Metaverse centre transforms trip planning
The new Tourism Information Centre introduces an immersive digital layer to the visitor experience. Through its TIC Metaverse facility, travellers can explore virtual representations of attractions before finalising their itineraries.
This approach can help visitors understand what different destinations offer, particularly when they have limited prior knowledge of Tripura. Digital previews may also encourage travellers to consider places beyond the most familiar attractions.
The centre can guide tourists toward cultural sites, landscapes and local experiences while providing practical assistance. Staff at the facility can also help visitors navigate booking procedures and tourism information.
For families and younger travellers, the immersive format may make destination discovery more engaging. Meanwhile, tour planners can use visual previews to compare attractions and organise available time more effectively.
The initiative shows how regional tourism authorities can use technology without replacing human assistance. Instead, digital tools can strengthen traditional information services by presenting destinations in a more visual and interactive format.
Tourism gains stronger digital gateway
MBB Airport is Tripura’s principal aviation gateway and an important arrival point for leisure, business and visiting-friends-and-relatives travel. Improving services around the terminal can therefore influence the wider destination experience.
The launch received support from senior transport, tourism, airport and security officials. Their involvement reflects the coordination required to operate app-based mobility safely within a busy airport environment.
A dependable airport cab system can support hotels and tour operators by improving guest transfers. It may also help event organisers and business travellers plan journeys with greater confidence.
Meanwhile, the Tourism Information Centre can promote longer stays by helping visitors identify additional places to explore. When travellers discover more activities after arrival, they may extend itineraries and increase spending across accommodation, restaurants and local transport.
Digital mobility raises destination competitiveness
Modern travellers increasingly expect familiar digital services throughout their journeys. Airports may provide advanced terminals, but poor onward connectivity can still weaken the overall experience.
Tripura’s latest initiative addresses that gap by linking a major airport with app-based vehicles, regulated local transport and immersive tourism planning.
The success of the service will depend on vehicle availability, transparent pricing, driver participation and consistent passenger support. Reliable mobile connectivity will also remain important for travellers using the booking platform.
However, the launch gives visitors more choice from the moment they arrive. It also positions Agartala as a regional destination willing to combine mobility innovation with digital tourism promotion.
By connecting MBB Airport and Jogendranagar railway station while introducing metaverse-based discovery, Tripura is creating a more integrated visitor journey. The development could strengthen tourism access, improve traveller confidence and encourage wider exploration across the state.
