Why Seoul Is Launching Certified Patient-Friendly Hotels for International Travellers

Seoul is launching its first official designation programme for patient-friendly accommodation as rapidly growing medical tourism increases demand for suitable extended stays.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Tourism Organization will accept applications for the Seoul Medical-Friendly Accommodation designation from September 14 through September 30, 2026. Registered accommodation businesses operating within Seoul can apply.

The programme aims to help international patients and accompanying family members identify suitable places to stay before, during and after medical treatment. It will also establish clearer standards for accommodation serving visitors with mobility, emergency-response or longer-stay requirements.

South Korea received a record 2.01 million foreign patients in 2025, an annual increase of 71.9%. Seoul accounted for 1.76 million of them, rising 75.6% from one million during the previous year.

That concentration places growing pressure on the capital’s hotels and other accommodation providers to support travellers whose requirements can differ substantially from those of conventional leisure guests.

Programme Bridges Treatment And Recovery

Leaving a hospital does not always mean that a patient is ready for unrestricted travel. Some visitors need additional time in Seoul for monitoring, follow-up consultations or physical recovery.

Standard hotel rooms may present difficulties for guests with reduced mobility. Routes between entrances, lifts and rooms can also become obstacles. Access to laundry and reliable emergency assistance may be especially important during an extended stay.

The designation seeks to close this gap without converting hotels into healthcare facilities. Selected properties will remain accommodation businesses and will not receive authority to provide medical treatment.

This distinction is important for travellers. A patient-friendly designation will indicate that a property meets relevant hospitality and accessibility standards. It will not mean that doctors, nurses or clinical services are available inside the hotel.

Accessibility And Emergency Systems Shape Selection

The city will assess applicants through document reviews and property inspections before determining how many hotels or other lodging facilities receive the designation.

Major evaluation areas include proximity to medical institutions and convenient movement for patients. Inspectors will also examine wheelchair-accessible routes, 24-hour emergency-response systems and services supporting longer stays, including laundry facilities.

These criteria focus on practical parts of the patient journey. Easy movement can reduce strain after treatment, while rapid communication during an emergency can help guests obtain appropriate medical assistance.

The final designation will remain valid for one year. This limited period gives the programme a framework for maintaining standards as the international patient accommodation market develops.

Travellers should still discuss individual recovery needs directly with their medical provider and accommodation before booking. Requirements can vary significantly according to the treatment, mobility level and planned length of stay.

Official Registry Will Improve Trip Planning

Designated properties will gain visibility through Seoul’s medical tourism platform, which serves international visitors in five languages. They may also participate in medical tourism events organised by the city.

For patients, an official list could simplify one of the most difficult elements of healthcare travel. Visitors often arrange treatment, flights, local transport and accommodation while navigating an unfamiliar language and healthcare system.

Clear identification of suitable properties can reduce uncertainty during the planning process. It may also help accompanying relatives select accommodation that balances access to a hospital with the practical needs of a longer stay.

Hotels could benefit from greater exposure to an expanding visitor segment. However, accreditation will also encourage operators to examine accessibility, staff readiness and emergency procedures more closely.

Medical Tourism Supports Seoul Visitor Economy

The accommodation initiative forms part of Seoul’s effort to strengthen its position as an international medical tourism destination.

Foreign medical spending across South Korea reached 213.1 billion won in July 2026 alone. Beyond treatment costs, patients and their companions can generate demand for hotels, restaurants, transport, pharmacies, interpretation services and appropriate visitor activities.

Longer stays may create further opportunities for serviced accommodation, dietary support and accessible transport. Family members accompanying patients may also visit cultural attractions, shop or dine locally while remaining close to the treatment facility.

The programme can therefore strengthen connections between healthcare and tourism. It may also improve Seoul’s reputation by supporting international patients throughout more of their journey, rather than focusing only on clinical care.

Travellers Need Clear Expectations

Once the selected accommodation list is published, international visitors should compare properties according to hospital location, accessible transport and personal recovery requirements.

They should confirm room layouts, bathroom access, meal options, laundry arrangements and emergency procedures directly with the property. Medical questions should remain with licensed healthcare professionals.

Seoul’s first patient-friendly accommodation designation represents a practical response to record foreign patient arrivals. By setting standards for accessibility, emergency readiness and extended stays, the city is building a more integrated medical tourism system that supports patients from arrival through recovery.
