Vietnam Airlines’ Visa and AWS Deals Could Transform Travel Across Vietnam

Vietnam Airlines has signed cooperation agreements with Visa and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop a more connected passenger journey. The agreements, announced on September 24, cover payments, loyalty, artificial intelligence, cloud technology, data and inflight connectivity.

For travellers, the ambition extends beyond buying a ticket. Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority says the initiative aims to connect reservations, payments, airport services, flights and experiences at the destination. The agreements establish areas for future work, while several related digital services already exist.

The development could matter to Vietnam’s tourism sector if the airline connects more visitor spending and travel services through its platforms. It could also give passengers simpler ways to manage parts of a trip, from booking to exploring the country.

Lotusmiles Could Extend Across a Vietnam Trip

Under its agreement with Visa, Vietnam Airlines plans to explore a broader role for Lotusmiles. The frequent-flyer programme could develop into a travel and lifestyle platform rather than focus mainly on flights.

Potential benefits include connections with airport facilities, lounges, priority check-in, restaurants, accommodation and shopping. The partners also plan to explore co-branded card products for Vietnamese and international markets.

For a visitor, such services could make loyalty benefits useful after leaving the aircraft. A programme linked to dining or accommodation could remain relevant throughout a stay in Vietnam. However, the newly proposed benefits are areas for development, and travellers should check current programme terms before making plans.

The Visa agreement also includes cooperation on promoting Vietnam and important air routes in strategic markets. That gives the partnership a tourism role alongside its payments and loyalty ambitions.

An Existing Payment Service Shows the Direction

Vietnam Airlines and Visa have already worked together on Lotusmiles Pay. Introduced with Asia Commercial Bank in 2025, the product combines Lotusmiles membership with Visa payment capabilities.

Eligible users can make purchases at merchants accepting Visa and earn miles under the applicable programme rules. The service links everyday spending with airline loyalty, offering an early example of how the partners can connect travel and payments.

Vietnam Airlines has also promoted opportunities for Lotusmiles members holding eligible Vietnamese-issued Visa cards to earn additional miles on qualifying international purchases during 2026.

Those existing offers do not mean every service envisioned in the new agreement is available. They do show how the airline could build a wider network of ways to earn and use loyalty benefits.

AWS Agreement Puts AI in Focus

Vietnam Airlines’ agreement with AWS centres on artificial intelligence, cloud computing, data and digital infrastructure. The airline is assessing AI applications across passenger services and commercial operations.

Its 2025 annual report describes work to analyse passenger behaviour and develop more personalised itinerary and additional-service recommendations. For travellers, that could eventually mean offers better suited to their routes and needs.

The airline has already made other digital changes. Its annual report says it introduced a new e-commerce website, improved online booking and integrated a 24-hour AI-powered chatbot. It has also been digitising loyalty and partner-management platforms.

These steps give passengers more ways to interact with the airline before reaching an airport. The more personalised capabilities remain in development, so passengers should distinguish current services from future plans.

Digital Cards Replace More Physical Membership Cards

Vietnam Airlines began gradually discontinuing physical Lotusmiles membership cards in September 2026. It is encouraging members to use digital cards through the Vietnam Airlines or Lotusmiles applications.

Members can use the digital card to access eligible benefits, including priority check-in, baggage privileges, lounge access and mileage accumulation through participating services.

For frequent travellers, carrying a membership card on a phone removes one physical item from the journey. Members still need to check their tier and benefit eligibility, especially when using partner services.

Connectivity Could Continue Beyond the Airport

The AWS partnership also covers inflight connectivity and digital cabin services. Vietnam Airlines’ annual report identifies these areas among its technology priorities.

If the work expands into passenger-facing services, it could make the airline’s digital experience more continuous. A traveller might manage plans before departure, use digital membership benefits at the airport and access connected services onboard.

The agreements also point toward a wider destination experience. Links with accommodation, restaurants and shopping could help visitors engage with local businesses while giving the airline a role beyond transportation.

For now, the clearest change is the direction of Vietnam Airlines’ partnerships. Visa and AWS will support work across different stages of travel, while individual products will require further development. The result could be a more connected trip for visitors to Vietnam, with greater choice in how they book, pay and use loyalty benefits.
