Seat Selection

American Airlines App Now Finds Better Seats for Eligible Travellers

American Airlines has introduced an app feature that can move eligible AAdvantage members to a preferred seat when one becomes available. Travellers set their preference after booking, and the system monitors qualifying seats without repeated checks of the seat map.

The feature applies to eligible members on single-passenger reservations who already have an assigned seat. It searches for matching options within the traveller’s existing cabin until 24 hours before departure. If a qualifying seat opens, the app updates the reservation and sends a notification.

American says the automated move adds no seat charge. The system considers only seats the traveller can access under their existing booking conditions. It does not provide an upgrade to another cabin.

For passengers who value a window or aisle seat, the change addresses a familiar booking frustration. A preferred position may be unavailable when they reserve a flight but open later as other passengers change plans.

How the New Seat Feature Works

An eligible traveller can activate the feature after completing a booking in the American Airlines app. They select the seat characteristics they prefer, giving the system a clear instruction for any later change.

The app then checks qualifying availability as the departure date approaches. When a seat matches the preference and booking rules, it can assign that seat automatically. The passenger receives a notification after the reservation changes.

This process removes the need to reopen a seat map repeatedly. Previously, a traveller hoping for a different seat had to spot an opening and make the change before someone else selected it.

Availability remains central to the experience. The feature cannot create a window or aisle seat if none opens. It also stops monitoring 24 hours before departure, so passengers should review their booking closer to travel.

American’s general seat policies still apply. Airlines may change assignments for operational, safety or security reasons, even after a passenger selects a seat.

A More Personal Booking Experience

Seat location can affect how comfortable a journey feels, even when every option sits in the same cabin. Some passengers prefer an aisle for easier movement. Others want a window seat or a position that suits their travel plans.

American’s feature lets eligible members record that preference once. The technology handles the repetitive search and acts when it finds a qualifying match.

That approach could prove useful on flights booked well ahead of departure. Seat maps often change between reservation and travel as customers adjust bookings. A traveller no longer needs to predict when a preferred seat might appear.

The feature also gives passengers a reason to keep notifications enabled and their app details current. They should still check the seat shown in their reservation before travelling, especially if their flight details change.

For families or groups, the eligibility limit matters: the described feature is available on qualifying single-passenger reservations. Travellers sharing a reservation should continue managing their seating arrangements through the available booking tools.

AI Helped Develop the Tool

American developed the capability through ADEPT, its two-year technology development programme. The team began with the customer problem of repeatedly checking seat maps, then built a workflow around preferences and eligibility rules.

AI-enabled tools supported parts of the development process. The passenger-facing function monitors availability and automates permitted seat changes. American has not described the feature as an AI system that decides which cabin a customer should receive.

That distinction helps explain what passengers can expect. The app follows a selected preference within defined limits; it does not promise the best seat on the aircraft or override seat charges and booking restrictions.

The update also forms part of a broader change in airline apps. Travellers increasingly use their phones to manage bookings, boarding passes and flight information. Automating a small task can make that digital journey easier.

What It Means for Travellers

The new feature will have its clearest effect before departure. It could save eligible passengers time while improving their chance of securing a preferred seat if one opens within their cabin.

It does not alter flight schedules, destination access or the number of seats available. Its value lies in making an existing booking easier to manage.

Travellers should confirm that their reservation qualifies, choose a preference in the app and review any subsequent notification. Those who need a specific seat arrangement should also check the final assignment before heading to the airport.

For American Airlines, the launch shows how a focused digital change can address an everyday travel concern. For eligible AAdvantage members, it offers a simpler way to seek a better seat without watching the seat map themselves.
