Essential ABTA Travel Tips for UK Families Going Abroad This Summer

ABTA releases vital travel checklist to help UK families prepare for summer holidays abroad in 2025. Tips include passports, insurance, airport rules, and more

ABTA Issues Urgent Travel Checklist for Parents Ahead of 2025 School Holidays Abroad

As millions of British families prepare to escape on overseas getaways during the school summer holidays, ABTA – The Travel Association – has released a crucial travel checklist designed to ensure a hassle-free start to the season. With nearly half (46%) of UK households planning to holiday abroad in 2025, the guide aims to help parents and guardians avoid last-minute problems and enjoy a smooth travel experience.

1. Verify Passport Validity to Meet EU Entry Rules

ABTA is urging all travellers to check their passport’s issue and expiry dates early, especially those heading to the European Union. Following Brexit, British passports must have been issued within the last 10 years on the date of entry into an EU country. Additionally, there must be at least three months’ validity left on the passport from the planned departure date from the EU.

Failure to meet these conditions could result in being denied boarding or entry at your destination. The UK Government’s passport checker tool offers guidance tailored to individual countries, and parents are encouraged to verify each family member’s document status well in advance.

2. Buy Comprehensive Travel Insurance

Travel insurance remains one of the most important safeguards for any international trip. ABTA strongly recommends securing insurance that covers cancellations, medical emergencies, lost baggage, and delays.

Families should especially ensure that children are included in the policy and that pre-existing conditions are declared. According to data from the Association of British Insurers, millions of pounds are paid annually to UK travellers needing medical assistance abroad—highlighting the importance of coverage.

3. Understand Current Airport Liquid Restrictions

Although airports such as Birmingham and Edinburgh have relaxed the 100ml liquid rule thanks to new security scanning technology, many UK and international airports still require liquids to be under 100ml, placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag.

Since inconsistencies still exist across airports, ABTA recommends sticking to the traditional liquid restrictions to avoid confusion and delays at security checkpoints.

4. Keep All Required Travel Documents Ready

Before leaving home, families are advised to assemble all essential documents, including passports, boarding passes, accommodation confirmations, travel insurance details, and visas if required. Creating a checklist for each family member can prevent oversights and reduce stress during airport check-in.

For travel to certain countries outside the EU, e-visas or pre-approval forms may be needed—so always check the official government travel advice for your destination.

5. Check Health, Vaccination, and COVID-19 Entry Rules

Although many countries have relaxed their COVID-19-related travel restrictions, some still require proof of vaccination, recent test results, or travel health declarations.

Parents should also research mandatory or recommended vaccinations for their destination, especially for long-haul or tropical destinations. The NHS Fit for Travel website is a reliable source for country-specific health guidance.

6. Arrange Airport Transfers or Car Rentals in Advance

To avoid last-minute stress upon arrival, ABTA encourages travellers to pre-book airport transfers, taxis, or car rentals. Many destinations offer discounted rates for early bookings, and securing a transfer in advance can save families from long queues or high prices at the airport.

7. Double-Check Airline Baggage Allowances

Each airline has its own baggage size and weight limits, which can vary for hand luggage, hold bags, and special equipment such as prams or sports gear. ABTA suggests reviewing these details and weighing bags at home to avoid unexpected fees at the airport.

Also, if you’re carrying travel strollers or baby gear, some airlines allow them at no additional charge, while others require them to be checked in advance.

8. Pack Essentials to Keep Children Comfortable

Travelling with children requires extra preparation. Families should pack snacks, entertainment (such as tablets, books, or toys), headphones, wet wipes, medications, and a change of clothes for the journey.

These items can be lifesavers during long-haul flights, delays, or road transfers. Don’t forget chargers and power banks to keep electronics functioning during the trip.

Final Advice from ABTA: “Check It, Don’t Regret It”

Graeme Buck, Director of Communications at ABTA, emphasized the importance of early preparation:

“For many people, going on holiday is the highlight of the year. We want their breaks to go without a hitch, which is why we’re encouraging parents to take the time now to make sure they ‘check it, don’t regret it.’”

ABTA’s members, including travel agents and tour operators, can also assist with last-minute bookings and advice, ensuring the best options for families looking to make the most of the school summer break.

With international travel continuing to rebound in 2025, planning ahead is more important than ever. From passport rules to kids’ packing lists, this checklist helps families feel confident, secure, and ready to create lasting summer memories abroad.
