Detroit is preparing for a major expansion of its luxury hospitality landscape as JW Marriott Detroit Water Square moves toward its planned opening in 2027, creating a new waterfront destination for premium leisure travellers, corporate visitors and convention delegates.
The 25-storey property will become a major addition to Detroit’s international waterfront. Marriott currently lists 601 guestrooms and suites, floor-to-ceiling windows, four dining experiences, extensive wellness facilities and approximately 53,000 square feet of meeting and event space.
A direct skybridge will connect the hotel with Huntington Place, strengthening Detroit’s ability to combine luxury accommodation with large-scale convention infrastructure.
For Michigan tourism, the development represents more than another hotel opening. It creates a substantial new hospitality anchor within Detroit’s expanding riverfront district.
Waterfront location strengthens Detroit tourism
JW Marriott Detroit Water Square will occupy a prominent position near the Detroit Riverwalk and Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park.
The location provides visitors with access to downtown entertainment, cultural attractions and waterfront recreation while maintaining direct connections with Detroit’s major convention infrastructure. Marriott also positions the property approximately 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
That combination could appeal strongly to travellers extending business visits into leisure stays.
Detroit has continued positioning itself as a meetings and events destination, with Huntington Place acting as one of its most important assets.
The convention centre spans approximately 2.4 million square feet and includes extensive exhibition, meeting and banquet facilities.
Connecting a major luxury hotel directly to that complex could make the destination more convenient for large international events.
More than 600 rooms expand premium capacity
Accommodation will form the centrepiece of the property.
JW Marriott Detroit Water Square will feature 601 guestrooms and suites, including 44 suites across several premium categories.
Marriott describes the rooms as featuring floor-to-ceiling windows providing water and downtown views, alongside spa-inspired bathrooms and modern connectivity.
The large inventory will allow the hotel to serve individual luxury travellers while accommodating significant convention and corporate groups.
An Executive Lounge on the fifth floor will provide additional workspace, seating, refreshments and personalised services for qualifying guests.
For Detroit, that scale could help address demand from major events requiring substantial blocks of high-end rooms within immediate reach of Huntington Place.
Huge event facilities target convention market
Meetings and events will be one of the hotel’s most important business segments.
The property will provide 17 event rooms and more than 52,800 square feet of total function space.
Its Edward R. Smith Ballroom will span approximately 16,206 square feet, while the Water Square Ballroom will offer around 12,329 square feet. Both are designed with natural light and outdoor waterfront terraces.
Fourteen additional flexible meeting rooms, advanced audiovisual capabilities and river-view pre-function areas will support corporate events, conferences, weddings and social gatherings.
The skybridge connection to Huntington Place could be particularly valuable for event organisers.
Delegates will be able to move between accommodation and convention facilities without relying on ground transportation, strengthening Detroit’s competitiveness for meetings requiring integrated hotel and venue infrastructure.
Spa and wellness add urban resort appeal
Wellness will also become a major part of the guest experience.
Marriott currently describes Spa by JW as a 15,000-square-foot sanctuary incorporating waterfront treatment rooms, thermal experiences and spaces dedicated to movement and relaxation.
The property will also include a 50-foot indoor lap pool and a 24-hour fitness facility.
These amenities help position the property somewhere between a traditional city convention hotel and an urban waterfront retreat.
That distinction matters as premium travellers increasingly combine corporate trips with wellness, dining and leisure experiences.
Four dining concepts connect hotel with Detroit
Food and beverage will provide another major tourism attraction.
Verena will offer all-day American dining with locally inspired menus and river views. JW Market will provide an elevated grab-and-go concept focused on convenient meals, coffee and snacks.
The Assembly will operate as a lobby bar with an outdoor waterfront terrace, while Joe Muer Seafood + Chops will reinterpret an established Detroit dining name through seafood, prime and Wagyu steaks and seasonal dishes.
Marriott has also announced Andiamo Italian Chophouse as part of the property’s culinary offering, further expanding its food-led appeal.
Detroit gains a new luxury tourism landmark
The arrival of JW Marriott Detroit Water Square could reshape how travellers experience downtown Detroit.
Its combination of luxury rooms, riverfront surroundings, destination dining, wellness and large-scale meeting infrastructure creates multiple reasons for visitors to stay beyond a single convention or business appointment.
The project also strengthens the relationship between hospitality and Detroit’s broader waterfront transformation.
As the city continues attracting conferences, cultural visitors, sports travellers and leisure demand, premium accommodation capacity will become increasingly important.
JW Marriott Detroit Water Square is therefore positioned to become more than a new luxury property. Its scale, waterfront setting and direct convention-centre connection could establish it as one of Detroit’s defining hospitality developments of the coming decade and an important new gateway for Michigan tourism.
