Helsinki Airport is entering the summer 2026 travel season with almost 140 direct destinations, upgraded passenger services and new family-friendly spaces, strengthening Finland’s position as a well-connected European tourism gateway.
The expanded network gives travelers more options for beach holidays, city breaks, cultural trips and long-haul journeys. Meanwhile, new restaurants, shops and relaxation areas are transforming the terminal experience for departing passengers, international visitors and travelers connecting through Finland.
The improvements arrive as summer demand builds across Europe. Helsinki Airport is reinforcing its role not only as Finland’s primary international hub but also as a transfer point linking regional airports with destinations across Europe, Asia and North America.
New Routes Open More International Travel Options
Summer 2026 brings several major additions to Helsinki Airport’s network. China Southern Airlines launched flights between Beijing Daxing International Airport and Helsinki at the start of the summer season. The service initially operates three times weekly before increasing to daily flights from midsummer.
Finnair is also expanding its offering with new European destinations including Catania, Florence, Kos, Kuressaare, Luxembourg, Stavanger, Thessaloniki, Tirana, Turin and Valencia. The airline has resumed direct flights to Toronto, adding another option for travelers heading between Finland and North America.
Luxair has entered the Helsinki market with flights to Luxembourg, while Norwegian has introduced a new route to Tirana. Later in 2026, Emirates will add daily year-round flights between Dubai and Helsinki from October, extending Finland’s international connectivity into the autumn travel season.
These additions support Finland’s visitor economy by opening convenient routes for inbound travelers while giving Finnish residents and connecting passengers a broader selection of international destinations.
Almost 100 Dining and Shopping Choices Await Travelers
The airport experience has expanded beyond flight schedules. Helsinki Airport now offers approximately 50 shops and 50 cafés and restaurants, combining Finnish products with international brands and a wide range of dining choices.
New spring openings include Luigi’s All Day Italian Restaurant & Bar, located near gate 40, and Fazer Café near gates 19 and 20. The renovated Dinner District and café-bar Brew’d have also refreshed the dining options available to travelers before departure.
A new restaurant and retail area near gate 30 has brought Finnish nature into the Schengen terminal. The space includes four shops and a café-restaurant, with brands offering outdoor equipment, Scandinavian fashion, Finnish flavors and convenient takeaway options.
For tourism, the retail mix creates opportunities to showcase Finland’s identity before passengers even leave the terminal. Travelers can discover local products, purchase gifts and experience a final taste of the destination before boarding.
Family-Friendly Spaces Transform Waiting Time
Families traveling through Helsinki Airport now have more ways to enjoy their time before departure. The new nature-inspired area near gate 30 includes a sculpture-like tree, a swing, wooden bears and miniature fairytale worlds designed to encourage children to explore.
The airport has also introduced a summer cottage experience in the non-Schengen gate area near gate 40. The space offers activities for children and adults, turning waiting time into a more memorable part of the journey.
These facilities reflect a growing aviation trend. Airports are increasingly expected to provide engaging experiences rather than simply processing travelers efficiently. Comfortable, entertaining terminals can improve visitor satisfaction, encourage longer dwell times and support spending across airport businesses.
Five Lounges Add Comfort Before Departure
Helsinki Airport now offers five lounge options for travelers looking for a quieter pre-flight experience. Lounge demand has increased globally as passengers seek comfortable spaces to relax, work or enjoy refreshments before boarding.
The expanded lounge offering complements Helsinki Airport’s focus on smooth passenger journeys. The airport was named the best airport in Northern Europe for the tenth time in 2026, reflecting continued investment in terminal services, efficient processes and passenger comfort.
Parking and Transport Support Summer Demand
Ground access remains an important part of the travel experience. Approximately 30 percent of passengers arrive at Helsinki Airport by car. Official parking halls and areas are located close to the terminal, with advance booking options available for travelers planning their journeys.
Public transportation, taxis and airport connections also support passenger movement during busy periods. Smooth access is especially important as families, international visitors and regional travelers navigate peak summer departures.
With new routes, nearly 100 retail and dining options, five lounges and creative family spaces, Helsinki Airport is positioning Finland for a stronger summer tourism season. The airport’s evolving passenger experience shows how aviation hubs can support national tourism growth while making the journey itself more enjoyable.
